Non urgent hysteroscopy

About a month ago I was told I needed a hysteroscopy and biopsy following a transvaginal scan that showed the lining of my womb to be 8.7mm.
I'm postmenopausal.

I was put on the 2 week pathway. (I have posted about this before as I was so stressed🙈)

I received an appointment for the end of September for the procedure. Apparently its just a routine hysteroscopy and I was never on the 2 week pathway.

I thought the biopsy was to rule out abnormal/cancer cells.

What circumstances would a postmenopausal women require a hysteroscopy?

It doesn't make sense to me...

I had one today, I’d had post menopausal bleeding which was automatic 2 week pathway. I had the ultrasound scan within 2 weeks but it was another month before the appointment for Hysteroscopy came through. Mine was because they found a polyp and wanted to remove it and send for biopsy.
If you’ve had post menopausal bleeding and a scan finds either thickening of the womb lining or polyps / fibroids then a Hysteroscopy is usually recommended.
If you have it done then take some strong painkillers beforehand. I took ibuprofen with codeine and paracetamol, it was bearable but very unpleasant!

@Karmatime wishing you a speedy recovery.

Hope you get your results quickly and all is OK.

I've not had any postmenopausal bleeding.

Only issue appears to be the thickness of the lining but the day I had the scan the sonographer said it was fine and 8mm was the cut off for any further investigation.

I'm not worried about it now but was before.

I think I will request a GA as there's no urgency and I can organise childcare.

I had it all done a couple of years ago and results were clear. The bleeding came back briefly so I had it checked again. The consultant said the polyp looked benign so I’m not too stressed waiting for the results. Why did you have the initial scan?
Don’t blame you for going for the GA, I was offered but went without as I’d managed before but with the polyp removal this was verging on too much!

Smleps · 08/08/2023 08:20

I could have written this post. This was exactly me. My results all came back clear and I sincerely hope yours do too.

Smleps · 08/08/2023 08:21

Sorry that should’ve been a reply to Karampost!

Smleps · 08/08/2023 08:22

Or even Karmatime - the hystoscopy didn’t help my IT skills!

Smleps · 08/08/2023 08:29

I found it all very unpleasant but would have a local anaesthetic again. If they are only taking a sample of your womb lining it will be much quicker and easier than polyp removal. I initially had that done and it was honestly ok - then they realised I had 3 polyps which needed removing and another hysteroscopy - this was much more uncomfortable and painful.

I am going through this currently. I had a period 13 months after my last one and 11mm lining. I also have a cyst, fibroids and adenomyosis and am booked in for a hysteroscopy in 10 days. Am worried about uterine cancer but adenomyosis can cause bleeding and a thickened lining so 🤷‍♀️. Dreading the hysteroscopy, I find them v painful. Neurofen doesn't seem to touch it. Have been offered gas and air this time....

Karmatime · 08/08/2023 10:17

@itstimeforme I took 2 x ibuprofen with codeine - I got them OTC plus paracetamol. They would have worked better if I hadn’t been called in early, they’d only had 20 mins! They also gave me a local. The worst bit was the water going in. The polyp removal felt weird and invasive but not painful.

itstimeforme · 08/08/2023 10:36

Thank you @Karmatime, I've never taken ibuprofen and codeine before, will get some!

Vinvertebrate · 08/08/2023 10:46

Have the GA if offered. If not offered, demand one.

itstimeforme · 08/08/2023 11:16

They don't offer GA, I think if I demanded one it might mean I would have to wait longer for the procedure and I don't want to delay. They offer a gas and air which I might try and a local anaesthetic. The last one I had a lovely doctor said can you stop moving your legs around so much it's making it hard for me to do the procedure! Honestly, it was all I could do not to shut my legs completely!

Vinvertebrate · 08/08/2023 11:17

There is no way on earth I would have the procedure without a GA. I know some women tolerate it, but I would rather give birth with no pain relief (x 10).

God that sounds awful.

I will have waited 3 months from the scan so a few more weeks isn't a big deal.

My anxiety is terrible so I need to do whatever it takes to get through it as I keep thinking of just not going and weaning myself off HRT

Karmatime · 08/08/2023 15:42

I tried weaning myself off HRT but within 2 weeks of taking it every other day, the mood swings were driving me and everyone around me up the wall! When I had the initial appointment with the consultant they were fine with me staying on it thankfully.
Although it was very unpleasant it wasn’t horrendous and it’s the day after now and I feel fine, just a little spotting. With a GA it should be much better.

Lioney · 10/08/2023 18:04

So had my appointment today.
Had another scan (only because I insisted). The lining has gone from 8.7mm to 6.2 mm.

The doctor said she would still recommend i have a hysteroscopy but would leave the decision up to me so I won't be having it.

Thankyou all, for your responses.
