Misplaced mirena coil

Does anyone have experience of this and what was the outcome? Xray showed it is not in the right place, but have ultrasound booked next week to see exactly where it is.

When I was due to have mine replaced they couldn't find the strings, I had a hysteroscopy to remove it, it was all fine. I was referred to a "missing strings clinic"! So it must be quite common that they go missing, nothing to worry about. Hope it turns up somewhere safe

I had a smear recently and my mirena strings are "missing" too!

The nurse did try to retrieve them , was a bit ouchy and made me bleed but nope.

So I've an ultrasound next week to go hunting!

My coil went on a 'wander' - had it removed and all was fine.

My strings went missing about 8 weeks after insertion and an USS showed my Mirena had drifted upwards so instead of it resting near my cervix, it was now sitting at the top of my womb and the stings were wrapped about the plastic part of the device.

I was told that it wasn’t a problem in terms of how it would work, she said it would still have the same effect regardless of its new placement, but that it would cause issues when I came to have it removed.

And boy she wasn’t wrong.

When I went to have it removed for the purpose of TTC (about 2-3 years later) I went to my GP who passed what can only de described as a long mascara brush through my cervix and up into my womb. She kept turning the brush around with the theory that the bristles would catch on the strings - and honestly, it was quite painful. After a few minutes of doing this she accepted she couldn’t retrieve the coil as the technique wasn’t working and I got referred to an Obstetrician-Led clinic at a local hospital to deal with it.

When I got into his consulting room he scanned me again to confirm where the coil was and then he had me put on a hospital gown and then I had to have my legs up in stirrups. I was mortified. One of the theatre nurses came in with a trolley that rattled with metal devices and then he shone a big light between my legs and he went on his hunt.

Whilst he was doing this the other theatre nurse was pushing hard on my abdomen with the USS device so the obstetrician could see what he was doing.

I will admit that the whole procedure was really painful and I did have tears in my eyes with a few mini gasps, cries and grimaces.

Thankfully they’d let me have my husband in with me so I just squeezed his hand until it was all over.

I was so relieved when it was out!

I had another coil inserted about 2 years later (after baby number 2) and I was terrified the same thing would happen again when it came to my strings but thankfully I had no issues that time around, and when I went to have it removed the coil hadn’t migrated and a quick tug on the strings and it was out.

I’ve never had another one since though 😂

The strings went missing with my first Mirena. My GP tried for a while but couldn’t get them. I was referred to gynaecology and ended up having four separate appointments over the course of four months. Apparently it took less than two minutes to actually remove it under general anaesthesia.

So my coil is still on my womb, but the strings have gone up and wrapped around it, I also have a fibroid right next to where my coil is!

@GG1986 Snap, except the fibroid, they never mentioned any at least.

Did they say anything about removal?

Nightmare! I have a phone call with my Dr soon to discuss. I want it out as been bleeding for 7 weeks and fed up, my skin is bad too. What about you?

This is my 3rd? 4th ? one and only one to have gone awol.
It's been in 3 yrs , so in theory can stay put for another 2.

My first one lasted 6months, similar issues to you, Dr said sometimes there's a dud one and to try another, but if still issues she'd remove it and we'd think again.
So I did a straight swap and have had no issues since. That was 14 years ago.
