Do nurses usually remove IUDs?

Just tried to make an appointment to have a newish (Mirena) IUD taken out but receptionist said no, only the GP can do that.

I thought nurses could take out IUDs? Pretty sure with all my previous copper IUDs, it's been the nurse.

Just hoping I'm not going to get the hard sell from the GP about keeping it in, having read some of the Mirena stories here.

It’s GP at my surgery.

CarriePT · 21/07/2023 16:35

Nurses at my surgery. Cough and pull.

Topseyt123 · 21/07/2023 16:37

It's either at my surgery.

If you really want rid of it then stick to your guns. Some will try to persuade you that the mirena coil is the perfect panacea to everything if just given more (and more, and more, and more ..... ) time to settle. Not for me it wasn't, and I gave it over a year.

Depends on what training the nurse has had.

Not all practice nurses can do it. Of the 3 nurses in my practice I’m the only one that can do it.

olympicsrock · 21/07/2023 18:07

Depends on what training each HCP has.

Tittyfilarious81 · 21/07/2023 18:20

@cakehoover123 how long have you had it in , is it causing too many problems

Misspinkdiditinthelibrary · 21/07/2023 18:22

If the nurse is FP (Family Planning) trained they can do it. However it depends on what staff are available at the surgery.
You may have to wait for a GP appt.

GP had to do my daughter's. And they ordered a special removal kit 😳

Calmyourselfdown · 21/07/2023 23:38

In my area, local surgeries don’t deal with IUDs. We have to go to the GUM clinic at the local hospital.

Runaround50 · 22/07/2023 09:10

In my area, who ever fitted it, takes out.

What's the issue with it?
Mirena stories?

cakehoover123 · 24/07/2023 18:43

Thanks for all the answers!

@Tittyfilarious81 @Runaround50 yes, I can't stop eating! Hungry ALL the time. Other than that is ok, but it's no fun being constantly hungry.

Definitely got the hard sell from the GP about putting it in, so was hoping to see the nurse to (quietly) get it out. But sounds like only GPs do removal in our surgery.

@Topseyt123 thank you, yes will be firm if it hasn't settled down by the time I see the GP.

I rang the local sexual health clinic and they said "we used to offer IUD removal but our funding for that service has been withdrawn" 😔
