Can anyone recommend the best contraception for a 16 year old?

It depends on her medical history, and which method she feels would best suit her lifestyle, she needs to be assessed first.

Look at the contraception choices website so she can see the options.

No matter what she chooses, I would drill it into her head the importance of also always using condoms for protection against STI's and added protection against pregnancy.

I've been on rigevidon ( i am a teenager) and I want to come off it as soon as possible. It's made me depressed and really irritable. I wouldn't reccommend it all tbh

It depends entirely on her medical history and how able to comply with instructions she is. I'd be inclined to book an appointment at either a contraception clinic or at her GP surgery with a GP or an ACP who specialises with women's health

Lots of younger women seem to like a non hormonal method. I think TikTok has really influenced this. I do understand it. However hormonal BC seems the most convenient. Has anyone found the injection a good method? Or the implant? Which pills do people recommend? Am going to the clinic for assessment. Btw.

@janefondofu. Which method are you thinking of moving onto? Do any of your friends recommend a pill? I looked on low down and all pills for 2.7 or 2.6 out of 5. Condoms got 4/5. But am nervous just relying on condoms.

I used the implant as a teenager and it worked perfectly for me. (And obviously condoms on top!). Equally my best friend got it and HATED it. Unfortunately it's one of those things that suit different people differently. So you can only try!

When my DD gets to that age, provided she is medically able to use it, I am going to suggest an implant. Saves worrying about remembering pills, meds affecting it etc and lasts 3 years. I would always encourage condom use too for STI protection

So I'll probably move on to the mini pill, so there is only one hormone. I do have mental health history, so I can't really say correlation or causation, but it has definitely impacted my mood negatively. My friends aren't on contraception as they aren't sexually active, but people I know through friends are on the mini pill, probably because of teenage hormones anyway. I would recommend the mini pill probably from what I have heard. But obviously, explore what you and your daughter feel is best, good luck and I'm happy to answer any questions about my experience. Also, if you go for the pill, you have to take it at exactly the same time everyday and I have ADHD, so I do find it difficult to remember but an alarm always helps. Like I said, good luck❤️

Can any Mum's perhaps suggest contraception that worked well for their 16 year old? Am going to see the gp. But any more ideas gratefully received!

My 17yo dd has started using the contraceptive patch, it's convenient and easy to use. She's had a few issues with stomach cramps but that maybe unrelated (the clinic is doing some tests.)

If you make an appointment with the sexual health clinic they will go through all the options with you.

I had a mirena coil and it was really good for me. No side effects whatsoever but make sure you have an experienced doctor fit it as some coil fittings can be really painful if the wrong people do it!

RubyWedding · 26/07/2023 18:38

My Dd had an implant from 16. Glad for me, as I don't have to stress about her taking pills which I don't think she'd be good at remembering to do. She's had some irregular bleeding though, but in general her periods are pretty light.

Luckypoppy · 26/07/2023 19:58

I've had the pill, the injection and the implant and hands down I would recommend the implant!
