Diarrhoea for the past month

TMI ahead!!

I've had diarrhoea for the past month now and frankly, I'm over it.

I'm 24 and my diet hasn't changed at all. I do consume a lot of dairy products, but I've done that my entire life so I don't see why that would suddenly become an issue now. The only medication I'm on is the pill, the same one I've been taking since I was 16.

I haven't been to a GP, I've tried signing up to the ones in my area but none of them will respond to me, I assume they're full to the brim.

I don't think it's anything like gluten/lactose intolerance or IBS as it really doesn't affect me that much. I'm going to the loo significantly more often than before, and every single one of my stools are watery and yellow-light brown in colour, but other than that, it's not really an issue (other than being gross and out of norm). I get a small amount of abdominal pain before I go to the loo, but other than that, I have no fever, no dehydration, no vomiting, and no bloating. My day is pretty much entirely unaffected by this, I can go hours without needing to go (I don't get woken up in the night with it), and I can hold it if I'm unable to get to the loo, but it's still weird that every single poop is like this and for such a significant amount of time.

The only other possible thing to note is my aversion to food. Around the same time my diarrhoea started, I began feeling sick when I eat (not every time, just often enough for me to notice the change). I would eat a couple of bites and feel super full to the point of feeling a bit sick, but I've never actually been sick, the worst that's happened is a bit of gagging (my gag reflex has also gotten worse recently, brushing my teeth can now make me gag). The only way I can eat a full meal without feeling uncomfortably full and sick is if I get high beforehand, which isn't a sustainable way to live.

It's more than likely something I've already listed tbh, but I feel like the combination of food aversion and diarrhoea might be something that I should be concerned about. I haven't been keeping a food diary but I will be starting today, I'm also going to buy some non-dairy milk and see if that changes anything.

If anybody has any more suggestions on how to handle this or what it could be, that would be greatly appreciated!

You need to have a stool test analysis to see what is going on. Something is causing this and it needs to be treated.

Would go to your nearest GP practice in person and speak to them about becoming a patient at their practice. I would also consider going to your local hospital too.

As this has been going on for a month I would seek medical attention asap. Let them know also if you’ve been abroad in the last month or so.

You need to be seen by a Dr.

overitunderit · 14/07/2023 06:44

Have you done a pregnancy test?

Mindymomo · 14/07/2023 06:54

If it were me I would definitely go to see a GP, maybe call in person to try and register with one. Yellow poo for over a month needs investigation, it could be your diet needing more fibre to bulk up poo, like brown bread, brown rice, weetabix, vegetables, but you could possibly have a bowel disease like IBS, chrons or diverticulitis. Either way you need to see someone to get proper medical advice and help with eating.

This was me 4 years ago. I went to the GP who did a stool sample and then sent me for blood tests (and ticked just about every box on the form to test for everything). I was 48 and concerned about bowel cancer. Everything came back negative apart from Coeliac disease. I had never had problems with gluten, bloating, tireness or IBS. It came as a complete surprise.

Anything over 10 is positive for coeliac disease. My results came back at 68. Going gluten free and 2 weeks later my gut/stools were back to normal.

“I haven't been to a GP, I've tried signing up to the ones in my area but none of them will respond to me, I assume they're full to the brim.”

I’m not sure what you mean by this but in the UK if you apply to join a GP practice and you live within their catchment they are obliged to register you unless they have special permission not to. Either way, they can see you as a temporary resident and get you sorted for this problem. You need medical advice not Mumsnet.

Don’t go to a hospital! A&E is for emergencies.

MrsRobinsonChangesHerName · 14/07/2023 07:13

Food poisoning? A lot of chemists now do stool samples you send away, it does cost but it would be quicker than getting a GP appointment- but do register with one

sevenbyseven · 14/07/2023 09:13

I'm not sure what you mean about not getting a response from the GP? Go to your nearest practice in person and register. It's not like dentists where it can be impossible in some areas.

Register with the GP and make an appointment. This really does need looking into.

Wildflowers123 · 14/07/2023 15:56

Thank you for all your responses!

@overitunderit I haven't, but I haven't missed any days of my pill in ages and I've had a "period" since it started, so I'm not concerned about that x

@Mindymomo I eat 50/50 bread, the only cereal I eat is weetabix and I try and get fruits and veg into my diet every day (probably not enough but they're definitely in there!). Honestly I feel like my diet is fine and never caused any issues before, but I will go see a GP

@sorrynotathome and @sevenbyseven I won't be going to the hospital don't worry! What I mean with the GP thing is that I've tried registering online with 3 different GPs in the area and none of them have gotten back to me, despite their websites promising a response. I phoned one of them a couple of months after registering to schedule a pill appointment and they had no record of me on their system and told me to register again and I'll hear back within 2 weeks. Again, heard nothing. I'm thinking they're just so understaffed the registration emails get lost or unnoticed.

It really isn't something that's negatively affecting my quality of life so I don't want to kick up a huge fuss when there's going to be people who desperately need to see a doctor. Either way though, I've taken in all your responses and I'm going to go in person to a GP next week to register and book an appointment for a stool sample. I appreciate all your assistance!
