Sterilisation during c-section?

I'm wondering if anyone has chosen to be sterilised during their c-section? Looking for some info. I didn't even know about this until my consultant discussed it with me when arranging my section, and it's something I've been thinking about since.

I definitely don't want anymore children. This will be my second and I've been diagnosed with heart problems during the pregnancy and I've certainly found it a lot more difficult this time than I did first time around.

I believe it only takes an extra 5 minutes to do the sterilisation? I'm aware it doesn't always work and there's about a 1 in 200 chance of it failing. How do you know it's failed? Are you supposed to just be careful and use contraception anyway just in case? When did you let them know you wanted to go ahead? Last time I saw my consultant he said have a think about it and my pre-op is in just over a week, two days before my section. Would that be too late to let them know by then if I did want to do it?

Thank you x

I don't think it would be too late then. It's not like they have to order anything in?? It seems annoying to have to use contraception as well!

If you have your tubes tied, the stats are about what you stated above. I opted to have my tubes removed entirely, this brings the chance of pregnancy to as close to zero as humanly possible.

What I will say is it's pretty much an extra operation, it took about 20-30 minutes longer and the recovery was definitely slower. I was in a lot of pain the first few days. But I would do it again in a heartbeat, I have total confidence of absolutely no more babies and the pain is a distant memory. Would 100% do it again, every time.

Also tube removal, somehow, massively lowers your chances of ovarian cancer.

I recently had a baby and was opting for a section that didn't happen for various reasons. One being baby decided to turn up pre term.

My consultant said that she would not tie my tubes during the section and that it's not something they do together very often anymore unless there's a medical need to. She said the rates of it failing are higher if it's done during a section than on it own because everything is swollen and out of it usual place and once you're postpartum amd things go back to their normal places, healing can take longer and be more painful if tubes were tied. There is also a higher chance of complications pp.

I guess different trusts have different guidelines.

Next year sometime I'll opt to have tubes removed.

I was sterilised during a c/s almost 16 years ago. TBH I slightly regretted it

I wish to god someone had mentioned this to me when I had my first c section with my third baby.

Instead they told me not to get pregnant for a year. I didn't even know it was an option.

I honestly would have loved to have been sterilised there and then and never have to worry about getting pregnant ever again.

I was sterilised when I had c-section over 10 years ago. I knew I didn't want any more babies. I do remember it being a bit longer surgery than my first c-section but I was still cuddling my twin babies shortly afterwards. I was told that the success rate was marginally lower being done during a c-section than separately and that any accidental pregnancy was a high risk of being ectopic. Well, 10 years and no pregnancy so I'm happy it was a success.
I told them I wanted it at my pre-op and it was also confirmed the day of the section.
If you opt for sterilization later as a separate operation that's a pretty big deal. I'd rather have one major surgery and have it over with. Of course you may opt for your other half to have a vasectomy instead, but my view was since I'm having the section, I'd just get the sterilization done at the same time.
One thing they did say at the pre-op was to be sure that if for any reason my c-section didn't result in healthy or live babies, was I still sure I wouldn't want any more. It is definitely something to think about no matter how negative, sad, and just impossible it feels to even consider.

I was sterilised during my 4th c-section 18 years ago. It only takes a bit longer and is a tiny bit more uncomfortable during recovery but nothing major. It does have a higher failure rate but my surgeon cut and tied mine just to make sure.

Wish I had been offered this option during my third c Section but wasn’t. My friend was for her third section !

spurs4ever · 09/07/2023 19:32

I asked for this to be done when I had my c-section but was refused as they said there is usually a high level of regret if done at the same time. I ended up having it done 3 years later. It was probably the right thing to do as I briefly considered a 3rd baby so I would've been devastated if I'd taken my own choice away but glad I managed to get it done further down the line x

3isthemagicnumberrr · 09/07/2023 19:46

I was offered this during my 3rd section last year. I didn’t go for it but wish I had now!

Roselilly36 · 09/07/2023 19:46

It used to be fairly common, but not sure it is the done thing now. For obvious reasons.
