Fellow Patient in Hospital Being a Twat

My sister is currently in hospital and the patient in the bed next to her keeps spraying a really strong smelling body spray. It's so strong, and she's spraying so frequently, that people can smell it in the corridor.

It's at the point where my sister is finding it hard to breath so my Mum asked the nurse if she could discreetly ask the patient not to spray so often. Instead the nurse came in and mentioned it really loudly, making it clear that it was my sister who wasn't happy.

Since then the other patient has been spraying the body spray even more, and tonight it's so bad that it made my sister vomit. At which the point the other patient laughed and sprayed the body spray again! We've spoken with the nurse again and she's said there's nothing they can do as they can't stop people spraying and there's no option to move either of them.

Im just looking for some advice on what we can do. My sister is ill enough without having to deal with this. Surely this comes under anti-social behaviour and the hospital will have guidelines on this as this woman is now actively enjoying making my sister feel ill.

No advice but I sympathise. When I was in hospital years ago for several nights on a ward, there was a dementia patient next to me who would scream all night and there was nothing the nurses could do.

It was about 7-8 years ago now but I still remember being so angry, and in pain, and tired.

This is why I hate hospitals. It can be a torture chamber, ironically.

The nurses should be dealing with this instead of just saying they can’t stop her. Of course they can. Go above their heads to the senior nursing staff.

@Soontobe60

your statement is inflammatory and dismissive of a diagnosed medical condition. Do I need to show you the results of my allergy testing? would more specific language help? I am allergic to fragrance mix I and ii, two mixes of the most common fragrances used in manufacturing. My life is extremely constrained by this allergy and people who are dismissive of it are the biggest part of the problem.

I have other bizarre allergies as well. All tested and confirmed by my doctors.

I’m a bit surprised aerosols are allowed in wards at all. Patients with asthma or COPD or other breathing conditions would be seriously put at risk by this.
When we were in hospital I was woken every hour for my DD’s checks, plus then the kid in the bed opposite would then get checked and would scream for about 15 minutes… then there was an adult next to me with a LD (who was allowed on the children’s ward) who would scream ‘you’re hurting me’ every-time his obs were done….
hospitals definitely aren’t somewhere you can go to for R&R

If she sprays it when you're there, fucking take it off her the second she puts it down. Take it to the nearest loo and squirt it down the loo until the bottle is empty. Then she can have it back. Rude people will continue to be rude until someone stands up to them. If she's so ill she won't be able to chase you.

Aye I'd be taking the thing off her and fucking daring her to even try to complain. In my strongest weegie accent which always helps with the intimidation factor Grin

Actually reminds me of the 27hr bus trip I had on Christmas Eve from Melbourne to Brisbane next to a “generously proportioned” young lady who doused herself in Vanilla Body Spray. (Do you have Impulse in the UK? It’s like the female equivalent of Axe.) Anyhow I asked her very politely if she could save spraying herself until we had a rest stop, and she smugly looked at me and sprayed herself VERY liberally. We were right behind the driver and he said without turning around “That stuff’s really nice love, Can I have a look so I can get some for my wife?” She handed it proudly to him and without even looking at it, he hurled it out the window into what we Aussies refer to as “Whoop Whoop”. (Middle of nowhere.) He then said “Learn some manners! That stuff fucking stinks!”

Hahaha brilliant! Well done that driver!
