Will the NHS do a preventative salpingectomy (fallopian tube removal)?

Hello, does anyone have any experience of this please?
My sister has been diagnosed with aggressive ovarian cancer and my maternal grandmother died of breast cancer, so my risk for ovarian cancer is elevated. There are several research papers that recommend a pre-emptive removal of fallopian tubes to prevent ovarian cancer but I don't think it is official NHS guidance yet. Our private health insurance doesn't cover anything preventative.
I am going to speak to my GP next week but wonder what their attitude to it might be. Any info gratefully received, thank you.

Speak to your gp but also ask your sister to check whether she will be offered genetic testing. Depending on her type of ovarian cancer, if she is in the uk, it is likely she will be offered it.

thanks, I'll do that.

A Google reveals patient information pages on a number of NHS trusts' pages for BSOs performed for exactly that reason.

They may require you to be tested for the genetic variants yourself, although a strong history may be enough in itself, but it's definitely something that can be offered to women in similar circumstances.

I hope your sister is comfortable and her treatment achieves the best possible outcome and you receive the treatment that's appropriate for you. 🌻

Your sister will need to have genetic testing, and then if any gene mutations are found you would be offered the same testing. This would then determine if you would be eligible for any risk reducing surgery. Be warned its a long process though.

I just wanted to say thanks to those that posted. My GP was pretty hopeless when I saw him - even though i told the receptionist what the appt was for, he literally said to me 'i don't know anything about that'. I am investigating private options, have no idea what costs will be. Thank you for the good wishes for my sister.
