Day 2 of period and I reckon I've lost...

... 60-80ml of blood so far.

Serious TMI to follow!!

60ml today so far, based on mooncup emptying.

At least 15-20 yesterday.

I've flooded my mooncup three times today. The last time was about 7pm and there was an enormous clot, like the size of a date, I think it might have caused the cup to overflow and hence the flood. I'm running out of trousers at this point 😂

Is this GP contact worthy? I don't want to just get told it's normal and not to time waste. I'm in a fairly standard amount of pain for my periods, ibuprofen is handling it. Feel pretty crap but nothing too awful. It's just the amount of blood loss that seems really excessive. And the clot of doom.

I'm 40, just, so I think too soon for the start of menopause? But I don't know what else causes heavy periods.

I've just completed a "self" assessment on the NHS website based on your symptoms and it recommends seeing a GP:

Your heavy period might be caused by hormones etc or it could be infection. It would be worth getting checked out.

Find out about heavy periods (called menorrhagia) and how to treat them if they are affecting your daily life.

Thanks @Poppins2016 , I've just had a go at your link and come out with a "heaviness rating" of 14/18 (did not know this was a thing). That's useful, it's something concrete to take to the GP.

Im 37 and had a very very heavy cycle recently. I woke up with a large bleed and so put on two overnight pads + two pairs of knickers for my commute and within 30mins, I'd soaked through them all and had to buy a new pair of trousers on the way to work.

Anyway, i have PCOS so was worried about a cyst or a fibroid and so i did the online triage at my GP and she phoned me back, asked a load of questions, arranged a blood test to check iron levels etc and for me took a wait and see approach. I had a referral to gynae already in progress for something else, so perhaps that changed things. In any case, my next one was back to normal.

My GP was not at all suggesting that i shouldnt have called (in fact she said i should have rung 111 earlier as it was over a weekend) so i think worth asking for a phone consultation at least to see if there is anything else to consider.

Definitely talk to your GP if you are in doubt. I had similar for years - perhaps a bit heavier as I could fill a mooncup in less than an hour on the bad days - and ended up very anaemic. That was only picked up by chance at my over 50s MOT. The GP then said I should not have to live like this, that the anaemia had probably been getting worse for some time and I had just put it down to tiredness/children/getting older etc, and prescribed tranexemic acid for normal months and norethisterone for holidays (I had sometimes taken that before). She said if those were not enough, there were other options and sent me a pack of info.

Once I wasn't anaemic any more, I had loads more energy, could stay warm more easily, and run faster!

These are really reassuring and helpful responses, thank you.
I will definitely get in touch with the GP tomorrow.

Sent an online enquiry this morning, got seen by the practice nurse and have a prescription for tranexamic acid and am on waiting list for Mirena coil. Also got a blood test booked and a load of swabs to do to check for infection.

I have had similar problems re heavy bleeding.

It is in your interests to find out why this is happening as well as treating the symptoms. Constant rises and falls of both progesterone and estrogen can cause this.

If it keeps happening I would actually consider endometrial ablation which will remove the womb lining.
