A thread about adenomyosis treatment and pain relief

I'd be grateful for any contributors who can advise on how they have coped with and treated adenomyosis.

I was diagnosed with it a few weeks ago by MRI after months of severe pain. I'm on the mini pill now which doesn't seem to be doing much.

Tramadol has stopped working. Codeine caused severe constipation. I can't take any NSAID painkillers. Paracetamol is all I can take now. That and a tens machine.

What have people found helps? Are there any treatment paths other than hysterectomy?

Thank you all

Hi
I think I may gave this adenomyosis. I have a bulky womb and terrible pain on my left side; like a sharp stabbing burning pain. Also abdominal pain.

What is your pain like? No pain killer touches mine.

Im speaking to my GP tomorrow to request a pelvic scan and MRI.

Totally sick of pain right now. I'm also on HRT and have a mirena coil.

Hope something works for you soon.

It sounds like you might. My pain is pelvic pain, front and back. Sometimes low throbbing and sometimes sharp but it never goes away. It often goes into the top of my legs.

I use 2 tens machines or hot water bottles (though I burnt my back with the hot water bottle so be careful).

I have had it for over 10 years so I sympathise.

Pre children - I was in pain every day, periods were awful and I was miserable. The only pain killer that worked for me was voltarol pessaries. Don't know they're still about but they were heaven. Natural stuff like hot water bottle was ok but obviously not in summer and not being crude but an orgasm was also helpful.

Then had IVF treatment to have my child so directly after birth at my six week check I went on the progesterone only pill and not had any issues since. He's 8 now so I've not had bleeding or pain since that day.

Can't have a hysterectomy as my bladder is stuck to my uterus so there's a chance I'll damage that.

I'm happy as I am but I'd consider it if I was in daily pain.

Thanks Frosty, that's helpful. I don't think I'd be able to use the voltarol as it's an NSAID. It's so frustrating that everything I read says NSAIDS. I react so badly to them I end up in a and e.

Perhaps the progesterone pill will eventually work for me. I don't know how long to give it.

I have a mirena to hopefully help mine after being diagnosed by ultrasound. Only been a month but it seams to be helping, and I swear my tummy is going down.

I had severe pain treated with paracetamol, nsaids and codeine. Then, on top of that, omeprazole due to the nsaids and laxatives to combat the joys of codeine. Made me feel soo tired. Things that also helped a bit was stretches to help relax the pelvic floor, those patches that smell like deep heat and baths. They're no miracle cure though, but helps a bit to take the edge off. The biggest difference for me has been a Mirena coil. I is one of the main options to try. It works for some and for others it doesn't. I've had mine for 7 months now and afte a settling in period of about 3 months it is so far doing its job admirably. Keeping everything crossed that it continues to do so.

Thanks everyone, a few people have said the coil. I did have one but it had to be removed due to infection. I'm wondering whether to try it again. I wonder if it would be more or less effective than the mini pill.

OP, it seems the Mirena is the gold standard first port of call, but people have such different experiences, that you'll likely only find that out by trying again, unless of course it for any reason isn't advisable for you. But one mishap like that sounds like just hard luck on that occasion, so it may well be worth having another go.

pieceofpasta · 26/06/2023 16:24

Thank you Sally. I think they didn't want to suggest it straight away again but I suspect that's what they are going to suggest next. At least it's easily removed

Novasure ablation was recommended to me. As the step before a hysterectomy. Don’t have the coil if on anti depressants etc as too many people are affected by it.

I didn't know that. I am on anti depressants. Do we know whether ablation works?
