Pelvic floor exercises

I gave birth 12 weeks ago and was told to do pelvic floor exercises but I ignored them as I didn't realise how important they were

I've now received a letter saying I'm at greater risk for loss of bladder and rectal control and prolapses and should go to physiotherapy

Does anyone have any advice for pelvic floor exercises to know if they are working and how often I should be doing them?

Download the nhs Squeezy app. Women should ideally do them everyday for the rest of their lives. I try and do three sessions a day.

Can you stop your pee mid flow? The muscles you squeeze to do that is what you are aiming for. It's a bit more nuanced than that but that would get you started while you wait for your pelvic health physio appointment.
Only stop the pee once. Then when you know what that feels like, you can practise replicating that action using the squeezy app three times a day.

If you can't stop the pee you could try lying on your back and put your finger in your vagina and try to squeeze it and draw it upwards. You can feel with your finger whether it's working.

The best thing though is to see the physio, who will make sure you are doing them right.
