What is wrong with me? GP not helping

Is this normal - I've been on my period for over 5 months now. In that time I've had maybe 2 weeks altogether where I haven't bled at all, but apart from that it's been a period that's lasted for months. Some days are heavier than others, but I'm constantly exhausted, really REALLY emotional, bad brain fog, bad cramps and generally feel run down.

I've went to the GP 3 times now. First time they took my blood and everything came back fine. The next time I was told to 'wait & see' and they would call in a months time to see if the bleeding had stopped, it didn't and they forgot to call me. Saw them again a few days ago and was told it's just my hormones (?!) and I'm tired/run down from having 2 babies so close together. Now my boys are good sleepers so they're not losing me sleep. I know something is wrong but what?? Any ideas?

May I ask how old you are now?

No it’s not normal at all.

I had a not too dissimilar situation re bleeding constantly and got fobbed off by the GP as well. I would also now speak to their practice manager re your case to date. In the end I phoned the local private hospital and saw a gynae for an initial consultation. I would suggest you do the same if at all possible. If your man can attend the appointment with you so much the better. I would also keep a daily symptom diary now particularly if you do not already do this.

Never accept normal, make them explain your results to you rather than just use the word normal.

Did they ever check your thyroid levels, I ask as brain fog can be linked to a problem with the thyroid gland. Bleeding constantly as well can lead to you becoming anaemic.

yeah, how old are you.
I don't think 3 visits = not helping, but not fixing it fair enough.
What dose iron pills are you on?

eatsleepeatrepeat · 19/06/2023 20:30

I'm 32 and not on any iron pills, just taking a daily multivitamin

If you can possibly go private for a consultation with a gynaecologist then I think you should. It will be around £500. It’s what I’ve had to do. You’ll get some answers this way.

TabbyBeast · 19/06/2023 20:45

I had something very similar in my late twenties; it was fibroids. I bled almost constantly for 7 months.

lljkk · 19/06/2023 20:57

All that heavy bleeding is likely to mean high risk of iron deficiency. That would explain brain fog & exhaustion.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 19/06/2023 21:17

This is not a period, it’s uncontrollable bleeding and it will pull you down health wise.

A multivitamin is not going to touch the sides of this, you need medical attention from a gynaecologist and from that a diagnosis.

Not sure where you are in the uk but I’ve paid for my daughter to see a gynaecologist and it’s approximately £225 in South Yorkshire. She is under an absolutely marvellous gynaecologist Mr Lotfallah at his NHS clinic in Rotherham (Yorkshire). It’s definitely not normal, my daughter was fobbed off so much, she has endometriosis. She was anaemic due to so much blood loss and being generally unwell and lost a lot of weight.

Keep on banging on doors and don’t let them gaslight you, you know your body and don’t let them bully you.
, which is what we encountered.
