I can’t cope with my periods anymore.

I’m 39, have two children and I have awful, awful periods. I

For the first two days my bleeding is horrendous……I just constantly leak blood and huge clots. I have to sit and sleep on towels, I can’t really leave the house because I can flood at any given time and I’m just bloody miserable.

I’m sat here on the toilet, looking at my jeans and thighs covered in blood, I have massive clots in my period pants and I’m just listening to the blood drip out of me and into the toilet bowl.

I’ve got work tomorrow and I’m dreading it as I have to take spare underwear and spare uniforms with me because I know I will flood at some point, or two points.

I use period pants as sanitary towels and tampons are just a no-no, but I’m still having to change my period pants every few hours due to flooding. People have suggested a moon cup but my clots are huge and would instantly just take up all the space in them.

For health reasons I can’t take the Pill or take Tranaexemic Acid (or however it’s spelt) and I won’t have the coil due to two previous awful experiences.

I went to the GP about 18 months ago because my periods were so intolerable and I was sent for an USS to look at womb lining and they said it was normal. This was about two days after my period had ended though so I didn’t expect there to be anything for them to look at.

My GP basically implied that a coil was my only option and as I’m not willing to have one then it’s tough shit.

So I’ve been carrying on living with them (and the pain) but I just can’t cope. It affects my day to day living and I just can’t take it anymore.

Im horrendously anaemic which my GP says is because of my periods, but again, because I won’t have a Coil I’ve just been brushed aside.

I was so tempted to post a photo of my clots to see if anyone else has them like this so I wouldn’t at least feel so some, but I thought that would be quite grim.

I just don’t know what to do.

I’m just venting really 😢

I'd ask for another gynea referral. If the issue is not your womb lining it is something else. Has you GP surgery got more than one doctor working there? It might be worth discussing with a different one. I would try to get to see a gynecologist who is well versed in endometriosis and adenomyosis. Both of those could cause you those issues. Endo doesn't tend to show up on uss and for adeno, some sonograpers are trained to spot it, others not (it may also depend on equipment used - not sure about that). Sadly you need to keep pushing. It apparently takes an average of 7.5 years to get diagnosed with endo. 💐❤️

I belong to a GP surgery with about 12 doctors and I was booked an appointment with the female doctor with a background in gynaecology. She was very happy to refer me and did it on my first appointment with her, but because Gynae said it wasn’t an issue my womb lining they just discharged me back to GP care. I was basically told to either have a Mirena or just get on with it.

So I’ve just been getting on with it.

My cycles used to be 35 days so at least I would have some respite between periods, but now they’ve reduced to 28 days and so it feels like I’m always dealing with it.

When I’m on my period I have to put three lots of washing on a day to make sure I will always have clean period pants to hand and to make sure the blood comes out of my clothes by washing them straight away.

I used to use super heavy sanitary towels and I would have to throw my underwear aware constantly because the banking of blood that was flooding them was just awful.

I absolutely hate this.

Four years I’ve been on prescription iron tablets and I still feel exhausted and crap most days.

In that case, maybe go back to your GP and see if she will refer you to a different gynea. Unfortunately most of the country has really long waits for gyneacology at the moment (I recently got discharged before the result of a biopsy arranged by the gynea, and had to be re-refered after the result!). It may be worth arming yourself with some info/NICE guidelines backing up why. Sadly there's not much info on Adenomyosis on the NHS sites, just a small note under Endometriosis, but it's worth reading up on. Heavy bleeding with clots is very common with Adenomyosis. Regardless of course, you need some help with this. Others suggesting getting some advice from your neurologist is a good suggestion. Many are helped by things like Mirena, but it doesn't work for all. Ultimately, it may be that hysterectomy is the right thing for you. This is a big step though so you may well need to try other options first if possible.

Back to the GP and keep going back.

Why don't you want to try a coil, out of interest?

I really feel for you. It's debilitating. Mine are lighter after my operation, but I still experience flooding for the first 24 hours. We are camping this weekend when my period is due and I am dreading it. I will need to set an alarm throughout the night to change my protection.

Hey there, I hear you. I have periods exactly as you describe; crazy huge clots, hideous flooding -all coming out in the two days at the start. I also have anemia and take iron Tablets. Had two Mirena's both fell out due to the clots pushing them out. It is so hard to plan things around the bleeding and has made work a nightmare at times. I feel so tired during the period week, like I have been crushed by a steamroller.

I had Hysteroscopy to see what was going on and at same time Ablation (Novo Sure) a year ago and to start with it seemed to help but then things got worse. My Gynaecologist has been very helpful, I have Fibroids and Adenomyosis. I have just got a date date for Hysterectomy at end of June.

Feeling somewhat relief it may all be over soon but obviously not looking forward to the surgery.

As everyone else has said ask to be referred back to Gynaecologist it is utterly debilitating living like this every month and you should not have to put up with it.

I’ve already had a Mirena twice before and had bad experiences both times. The last time I had one was a year after my second child was born and I bled everyday for 8 months. It was a nightmare so I had it removed.

Do this. I bet you are at least a 16 or 17/18. Give the GP a number.
Ask about an ablation
Ask if you could try vaginal progesterone or trandsdernal HRT (not being oral/going through your liver may not be contraindicated).
