Need a cystoscopy (flexible) - bricking it!

Afternoon all. I need a hand hold as I am going to have a camera up my urethra!

Had uti symptoms in March and the docs sent a sample off for testing and I was given 3 days of antibiotics. They then phoned a few days later saying there was no infection but microscopic blood in my pee. Doc scared me half to death saying it could be nothing, but need to check it’s not cancer. So referred me to urologist and a ct scan.

Finished the antibiotics but after a week the symptoms came back with a vengeance. Eventually I gave in as I was feeling so poorly and in so much pain, radiating to my back, my partner took me to a&e. Checked over (pee not checked which I though was odd) asked a load of questions and given a weeks worth of antibiotics and naxopram for the pain.

it all cleared but every now and then I still have urethra pain and a little pain in my bladder. Seems to be worse if I’m on my feet a lot/do physical things. Oh and chocolate seems to set it off?!!

Had the ct scan and the bladder was ok. A little distended and some debris in there. I do have large fibroids so have another referral for that. Doc didn’t really explain this very well as they seem to prefer to do things over the phone and as quick as possible.

Went to the urologist last week and he said given my age (49) still having the odd symptom and there was blood, I need to have a cystoscopy.

Yesterday while walking around all day while out and about I was having alot of pain in the urethra to vaginal area. After sitting and resting for a while the pain went and was ok for the rest of the day. No burning while peeing.

Could the pain be due to the fibroids / my age / bladder issues? Or all three!

So I guess how is the cystoscopy? I’m terrified! Seem to be conflicting reports from not being a big deal to being really painful! Trying not to over think it, but I’m worried it’s something bad. Sorry for the ramble, my brain is mushy!

I’ve had a cystoscopy but I had mine under general anaesthetic. I preferred to have it done that was as I was very nervous - something to consider. They did a few biopsies at the same time and it was over and done with in half an hour and I went home the same day. It was quite painful peeing for a day or so afterwards but other people I’ve talked to who’ve had it done said they didn’t have that - I suspect mine was made worse by the issues I have (was diagnosed with intercystinal cystitis aged 14 and it was getting worse and worse with age - now 42- and the long term daily antibiotics I was taking seemed to not be working as well). They were able to reconfirm the painful bladder syndrome and started me on solifenacin and amitriptyline which has really helped, I don’t need the antibiotics anymore which is amazing considering I’ve been on them since 14!

You may also want to look into vaginal atrophy - lack of oestrogen during the menopause can lead to dryness and thinner skin and bladder issues (more UTIs). I am now on Ovestin internal oestrogen cream and systemic HRT and it’s made a huge difference.

I had a cystoscopy and honestly didn't hurt AT ALL. It's not the most dignified process but otherwise it was fine. Have you looked into interstitial cystitis?

I'm booked in for one early June so I'll report back. Fact sheet sent along with appointment suggests a far from dignified procedure - not looking forward to it.

Hope my experience is like yours @thaegumathteth

Thank you all for the replies.

Just had the hospital phone and it’s booked in for 17/6. Doing my best trying not to worry about it.

@OllyBJolly i hope yours goes ok
@thaegumathteth hope my experience is the same too!

Talk to your consultant. It can be painless. But I'm sure you could discuss this.
