Bartholin gland cyst surgical removal

I have been told that I will need to have surgery in order to remove a bartholin cyst. I was wondering if anyone has gone through this procedure and what your experience/recovery was like. I have had an episiotomy and I wondered if it will be similar to this in terms of stitches/pain.

Thank you in advance

Hey,

I'm sat in bed writing this after having surgery for an abscessed bartholin's cyst via marsupialisation under GA. I can only speak of my experience of this specific surgery as I believe this isn't the only surgery for a bartholin cyst. I also had an abscessed cyst hence my surgery.

I've had my cyst for a year and it never caused any problems until now.

Went to A&E on Mon with severe enlargement of the cyst and infection symptoms - fever and nausea. Sent home with antibiotics. That night became more poorly and in so much more pain down there, went to A&E Tues and admitted to gyno ward for emergency surgery the next day under GA (Wednesday).

They explained the procedure to me but google explains it better. Woke up after GA feeling numbed and great, some soreness down there. Still saw a lump and swelling down there so I was frightened but they do pack the area during surgery, which they explained this is what this was as I believe the abscess drains gradually. Went home approx 8 hours later once they knew I could urinate and eatthey sent me home with 7 day antibiotics and codeine for pain.

Thursday-Friday were OK, lots of pain down there, very much bed bound in the sense I felt very washed out and too sore to walk or sit on a chair. Only laying in bed watching netflix and taking the odd warm sitz bath to keep the area clean, as soap can't get into the wound.

Saturday-Sunday (today) hell with the wound. Every time I urinate it seeps into the open wound and causes it to burn like hell. Making my urine less acidic by staying hydrated has helped a little bit with this. I am still bed bound because walking puts too much strain on that area. The pain is more like a numb soreness? Like a 4/10 on the pain scale. Still can't wear underwear or sit on a chair for a long period of time. No fatigue though.

The lump has shrunk substantially and is barely there anymore which is good so I suppose that means the surgery was a success despite this discomfort.

Hope you're OK whatever you end up doing.

Hi @Georgus thank you for taking the time to reply and for including so much detail. I hope things are improving a bit for you now.

it’s so helpful to have an idea of what it’s going to be like and how long I will be out of action. The consultant said mine was rather large and would require a lot of stitches.

this may be a daft question but are the stitches external or internal?

That's okay, I always think it's helpful to have as accurate description as possible even if some of it is TMI (sorry). The stitches are external on both sides of the incision - I can't really see them but can obviously feel that they are there.

I do think the procedure seems to be different person to person. For example some people get their stitches removed? Mine won't be - they'll dissolve naturally. Some people also experience way less pain afterwards. Either way, it's such a sensitive area to operate on that it's inevitable to feel significant discomfort afterwards.

Monday update BTW - MUCH less sore today. Can actually pee without the burning feeling seeping into the wound, some discomfort when sitting but definitely walking around more today and can get in and out of bed much more smoothly. I am hoping to be able to return to work on Thursday (8 days after the procedure) when I can maybe drive. Can't imagine sitting in the car yet! Also the lump itself has gone down significantly and I almost look like I have a normal downstairs now. Fingers crossed it doesn't come back as I hear it can for a lot of people.

Good luck for your surgery. Please ask any more q's if you want to know more.

Thank you so much, really appreciate this. Feel so much better having a clearer understanding of what it might be like
