I am 33 and egfr 76 ? Kidney failure pending? ?

Ive just found out for past few years my egfr has been between 75-85 . I’m 33 , not overweight but have recently been referred to rheumatology due to positive speckled Ana showing on numerous blood tests over the years and finally pushing my gp to refer .
Over the years I’ve been crippled with chronic migraine and struggle with bad stomach spells . I’m really worried where this might lead ( if anywhere )
Never had any kidney issues although I am a bigger for not drinking enough , could this be a cause ? Should I be worried ? Why has my gp never mentioned these levels and why are the classed as normal on blood results but yet from googling they are far from it ?! Please advise I am so worried !

The GP will have looked at the results along with your medical history/medication/other results and concluded that they are normal. Try not to worry but do have a chat with them if you are concerned.

Does anyone else have any experience of this ?

I have a rheumatic disease, and my GFR is often in the mid 70s - low 80s. It is probably mild dehydration; try and drinks a couple of pints of water an hour before a blood test and see if that makes a difference. It is unlikely to be anyrhing else unless you have a lot of protein in your urine. You can buy dipsticks on Amazon to test your urine for uti/kidney function.

@VioletladyGrantham Thankyou for this . I am actually being referred to rheumatologist for joint pain and Ana in blood and I did wonder if this would be connected . Can I ask how long you have had this for ?

A little over 4 years. I have mild systemic sclerosis. Both this and Lupus can affect your kidneys so l have quite an extensive yearly check at hospital to check my heart/lungs, and l also keep an eye on my kidneys mysrlf with a monthly dipstick urine check.
Have a look on healthunlocked: it is a huge online community, with several rheumatic specialist forums.

I'm 35 and recently have had a kidney issue. My egfr went from 91 a year ago down to 48 in January, along with uveitis, protein in my urine and high inflammatory markers in my blood. Had a kidney biopsy in March which was inconclusive, and egfr has now gone up to 67. Am now being monitored. No idea what caused it but was pretty scary! They think my issue was autoimmune possibly caused by a virus.

Labtestsonline.Co.uk is v useful.

Lkakpk · 06/05/2023 22:09

@VioletladyGrantham do they see your levels as a worry ? My suspicion is I will be diagnosed with something similar

No Lkakpk, because there are no other markers either in my bloods or urine and my BP is normal. I am not worried about it; like you have mentioned, l don't drink enough and in my case it is probably dehydration. However, l like to keep an eye on my own body in between yearly hospital tests, so l run my own BP and urine tests.
Perhaps buy yourself a Blood pressure monitor? High B.P (all the time) and protein in urine and low GFR would mean a conversation is needed with your doctor sooner rather than later.
On a slightly different note, be prepared for a potentially long wait for a diagnosis if it is something rheumatic. Lupus, on average, can take 6 years. (I got that info from an nhs poster in the rheumatology clinic at hospital.) My disorder took 3 years to get a diagnosis. Quite often, you can be bounced around different specialists beforehand. Sometimes it is because the symptoms they need for a diagnosis aren't all there yet. If you are interested, there are symptom charts online as you have to have a number of things going awry in your body to get diagnoed. It is all based on a point score.
A positive high titre ANA and joint issues may not be enough to dianose anything specific at the moment, and you may have to adopt a wait and see approach.

@Lkakpk @PickledWilly hi both, did you ever get any answers? Blood tests have shown a low egfr & I have protein in urine and waiting for an ultrasound.

thanks

PickledWilly · 24/06/2024 16:58

Hi mine completely resolved itself. Consultant has no idea why it happened, it was determined to be an acute kidney injury but the source unknown

Meagain24 · 24/06/2024 18:39

@PickledWilly thanks for replying! Did you go and get a bloodtest due to these symptoms or did it come up in a routine bloodtest?

PickledWilly · 24/06/2024 18:44

I was diagnosed with uveitis in my eyes and they did blood tests as uveitis often goes hand in hand with some autoimmune diseases. The test showed high creatinine and low eGFR and I had protein and white blood cells in my urine. This was monitored between November and March, weekly blood tests, and the eGFR kept declining so they did a kidney biopsy. The biopsy showed kidney damage but no indication as to why. I had a 6 week course of oral steroids last summer, and monthly blood tests which showed my kidney function recovered. During this time I had recurrent uveitis flares. They think the whole nightmare was caused by a virus that then sent my immune system wild. Was a worrying time! This was last year and I am now absolutely fine, kidney function has recovered and I no longer feel absolutely exhausted which was my only symptom. How low was your egfr?

Meagain24 · 24/06/2024 20:28

oh wow so strange, but I’m glad it recovered for you.

Mine is around 40
