hi, feeling very anxious ! got the mirena coil after my second child, about 2 years later i went back to the clinic as I could not feel the strings, they done a scan and assured me that although it has moved higher it was fine so carried on, just went to a smear test today and the nurse was quite concerned that nothing is visible and advise me to get a scan done again as it is not normal, she seemed very alarmed by it , mixed messages here by proffesionals, recently my back has started hurting and boobs are painful but no other worrying symptons, feeling very anxious about it all now, will go to the clinic asap but wanted to know has this happened to anyone else ? Sad

My Aunty has made me promise I'll never get the coil after her experience
She had it at 30 and it was 'lost'
Trying to find it they punctured her bowel
She had to have a full hysterectomy and then almost died of sepsis
So obviously she was unable to have any children
She's well into her 70s now and they never found it.

As I have made my own daughters promise they won't get one after my experience.

GP clearly didn't check lie of my uterus and inserted the coil. Cue absolute agony and me hitting the deck. She nearly called an ambulance as my blood pressure dropped so low.

A week later I was still in pain so returned to the surgery. She couldn't find it and referred me for a scan.. in a few weeks!!!!

I left crying and my DH stormed in to confront her!! Incredibly she managed to get me a scan the same day!

Turns out she had pushed it through the wall of my uterus into my abdomen. Explaining the agony. I had to have internal and external ultrasounds, then an x-ray, then an MRI, then a GA to remove it. How much did that cost the NHS???!

Coils are another form of modern torture and women are treated like second rate citizens by the NHS.

My auntie decided 3 kids were enough, had an old fashioned copper coil. A year later the triplets were born 😱

StinkerTroll · 27/09/2023 20:51

My coil went AWOL, short threads and I have a slightly odd shaped uterus apparently! When it was time to get it changed the doctor did have to have a bit of a rummage, it wasn't especially pleasant but it was removed and replaced. For me the coil has been brilliant (apart from the missing bit!), it's worked perfectly and I'm very happy with it

I saw the cat playing with this strange toy one day. I got busy and didn't check it out. Two days later I found the 'new toy' and nearly passed out. The pregnancy test was positive.

Somehow it the IUD dislodged and my body expelled it.

I am surprised by how common this is. It feels like this issue should be something women are warned about before getting the coil.

Its statistically unlikely to happen. All.medical procedures have risks, all drugs have side effects. Just because women respond to a thread because its happened to them, doesn't mean it's common event.

I’m sorry this seems off topic but I had my merina coil put in three weeks ago and I’ve had crippling migraines and stabbing cramps in my left ovary since. Does this die down because I don’t know if I can stick this out for 6months like some feeds have said. Xx I hope you managed to get some answer! X

No, that's not normal. I had to have a copper coil removed after reacting badly to it. Get this checked out soon.

OhForGoodnessSake1 · 27/09/2023 21:51

When I couldn't find the threads for mine, it turned out to be because of a large fibroid which had shifted things. i had to have GA to take it out after failed attempts when I was conscious - not nice but definitely better once I got to the consultant at the sexual health clinic rather than the GP!

Goodbookandcupoftea · 27/09/2023 21:57

The gp couldn't locate my coil either. Eventually ended up at Gynae with some torturous device to pull it out. The strings had been cut too short. Never again.

It's clearly a problem. They are not fit for function.
