after my shower this morning i felt and could see a hard painless lump in between my breasts
it's probably about 3 cms in diameter and feels fixed in place
i honestly have no recollection of it being there before but i have lost around two stones recently deliberately with dieting.
i'm actually away and won't be home for at least two weeks
I'm feeling quite hysterical.
has anyone else had this ?
is it breast cancer?
i'm 65 and in good health other than the weight still have two more stones to lose.

Hi OP, I've had breast cancer and while my lump was hard, it wasn't painless. Are you sure it's not bone? If you have lost weight, could it be your sternum is more prominent? Obviously you need to get it checked as soon as you return but please try not to panic until then. I realise this is easier said than done as I've been there but do get it checked as soon as you are able.

Away somewhere in the UK? If so go to a walk in or a gp or call 111 and ask them to arrange you an appointment.

Nobody here can tell you what it is and you'll be worried until you get checked out.

Unfortunately there is no way to know without having it checked, give your gp a call they may keep you waiting two weeks for an appointment anyway or they might be able to arrange for you to see someone where you are (if In the uk still, I don’t know if this is something they do but surely if it could be serious they can arrange something)
it’s natural to worry without knowing what it is but try to keep positive and get an appointment booked for peace of mind

I have and I'm fine. However, there is no point thinking along those lines. Can you get online to your surgery and book an appointment for your return? Try and enjoy your holiday. There are other things this could be other than cancer so try not to focus on that.

Cakeyface123 · 11/04/2023 10:06

It might be your sternum. I have one and I remember reading up on it after the birth of my second child and it said something about how the bone can become loose and protrude.

bondsy · 11/04/2023 10:12

Hi OP in the UK they have something call 'onestop breast clinics'.

They are private but you get an appointment quickly and the aim is to diagnose you on the day.

I paid £450 but got a fast appointment with an experienced breast consultant, plus a scan and they diagnosed it as a cyst there and then.

If required they do further tests including a needle biopsy so you can find out the same day.

If you have the money id really consider this as for me the peace of mind was soooo worth the cost.

This can be your sternum especially if you have lost weight. I still would get it checked when you get back home. However they way you describe it sounds like your sternum to me. Is it almost like a marble sized and shaped lump?

Reading your update, I think it's unlikely this is anything to worry about. Enjoy your holiday, get it checked as soon as you get back.

ddd20102010 · 11/04/2023 12:05

You could always send a photo to your GP along with a description of the texture of the lump to reassure you. It really does sound like your sternum to me. I have seen it in patients who have lost large amounts of weight. Try not to worry, enjoy your holiday and well done on the weight loss.

Aturnipforthebooks · 11/04/2023 12:11

I had this about 8 years ago. Got it checked by GP and breast clinic and it was fine.

pbdr · 11/04/2023 12:11

Is the lump right in the midline, just below your sternum/ just under where your rib cage meets in the middle at the front? There is a normal bony prominence there called the Xiphoid sternum which often causes a lot of panic when people discover it, and it tends to become more noticeable when you lose weight. Of course go and get checked by a doctor ASAP as only they can tell you for sure what is going on, but there's a very good chance what you have found is a normal anatomical landmark, so try not to catastrophise while you are waiting.

extramaturecheddarcheese · 11/04/2023 13:26

OP. I had this same thing after losing weight and was really worried. I googled a picture of a skeleton and found it was normal but mine had just been hidden for years! Have a google as it might be enough to put your mind at rest whilst your away.

humptylumtpty · 11/04/2023 14:48

thankyou all so much!
i feel very reassured but will still see the gp when i'm back .
so nice to have virtual friends xx
