A bit worried to start the mini pill

I am 10 weeks post partum. The GP prescribed me desogestral. Previously I have been on microgynon in the past but I was told the mini pill would now be better as I am still partially breastfeeding.

I was prescribed it a month ago but just been reluctant to start it as I've read so many mixed things about it, mainly negative. I've read loads about it causing skin to breakout, quite significant mood swings as well as irregular spotting.

I also haven't had my first period yet, so if I start it then I'll just be starting at a random point rather than the first day of my cycle.

Anyone got any experiences to share about the mini pill? Good as well as bad?!

Thank you in advance x

I was on the mini pill for years with minimal issues but after DD and breastfeeding, it didn't suit me (constant bleeding) so I moved to the combined pill once breast feeding stopped.

The minimal issue I had was a spotty chin (might have also been after DD now I think of it) and I was given a prescription for something that I rubbed on to help with it.

I haven't read anything negative myself and would recommend you give it a try

I took cerazette (also a desogestrel pill) for several years with no issues. It stopped my periods

I've been on the mini pill for years and I love it - no periods, no mood swings, no spots. No side effects at all. If you decide to give it a try you can easily just stop taking it if you don't get on with it.

I took desogestrel for years, no side-effects whatsoever

I’ve taken it for about 10 years. It’s been amazing for me. No side effects at all and it’s completely stopped my - very heavy- periods. I don’t have any bleeding at all. I am now menopausal and take it as part of my HRT alongside oestrogel and utrogestan. It’s brilliant. Well for me anyway…!

BettySweaty · 10/04/2023 18:22

I take it. No problems what so ever.

But it doesn't really matter how it's been for everyone's else. You need to know how it will be for you. And you won't know unless you try it.

If it's awful, go back to your GP or family planning centre and get it changed. If it works for you, great. X

I've been fine on it - no periods which is great!

SpamIAm · 10/04/2023 19:19

I've been on it 15 years and no issues. I was very reluctant to give up my microgynon, but have been enjoying a period free life ever since 😂 it's fine to start taking it before your period (just check when you'll actually be protected from) and if it doesn't suit you you can just stop anytime. Nothing to lose really.

You can start the mini pill at a random point in your cycle as long as you are sure you're not pregnant. Just use extra precautions/abstain for the first week.

dementedpixie · 10/04/2023 19:41

You only need 2 days of pill taking to be protected if its the mini pill. It's 7 days for the combined pill

Thank you all SO much for your replies. I think I better just give it a go and see how I get on. Worst case I can always go back to the GP and review.
