At my wits end (awful periods)

I've been on blood thinners since October, and think I'm probably starting the menopause

I've always had heavy periods, however the last 3 have been really bad, using a towel and hour at their worst

In the last 24 hours I have soaked through 4 pairs of knickers and trackers, which is a record for me!

Do I just have to suck this up or is there something the gp can do?

I'm not sure about the blood thinners but it's definitely worth seeing your GP. I had terrible periods mid 40s. GP suggested the mirena coil and I haven't looked back. It's been such a blessing

Valhalla17 · 09/04/2023 11:35

Mirena coil did the job for me, speak to the gp and ask about this

Was about to say the same thing!

Thanks all

I've had the coil before, however when it came time to change it they couldn't find it, I had to have an internal scan and a procedure to have it removed, and for that reason I wouldn't have another one

There are things your GP can do - it is worth speaking to them.

In the meantime, Lillets maternity pads are massive and very absorbant.

Max dose ibuprofen can help too, if you can take it. (Have it with food cause it's hard on your stomach!)

Have you got any tranexemic acid tablets? I got some but hardly needed them after going on a bakc to back progesterone only pill (azalia).

low as possible carb without being keto also helps with pain, or maybe that was just me. I'm not keto now, but that's because i'm 52 now, on hrt. it helped at the time though (late forties)

I was having heavy periods and had an ablation. It has worked so well, and meant that my periods are no very lights, and last for two days

I was wondering about the pill

Will see if I can grab some transechimic acid from the pharmacy

Mini pill is an option but often you’ll still have bleeding for a while on it and possibly erratic bleeding but maybe not as heavy. I’ve been on it for years now for dreadful periods (lupus related) and initially I had a lot of on off bleeding but after a few months it stopped and now I have no bleeding at all. I am 42 now and in early menopause and actually have it as part of the progesterone for my HRT alongside oestrogel and utrogestan. Still no bleeding.

Hi 👋 fellow awful heavy period sufferer here. Can use contraception
what helps in my experience is
Ibuprofen
Iron tablets - anemia is a viscous circle with heavy periods. The more anemic you get the heavier the periods
Ginger extract in capsule form - it’s surprisingly effective. Take up to two a day. But definitely check with GP in case it doesn’t work with the blood thinners.
And no heavy periods are not normal and should be investigated.

Tranexamic acid is prescription only and i don't think you can take it with blood thinners.

I'm on iron tablets just now as well!
Awful isn't it?

Why are you on blood thinners, OP?

Why are you on blood thinners, OP?

I had a blood clot in my right calf last October
