I just got on the scales for the first time in ages and I've gained over a stone.

HOW?!?!?

Does anyone else feel like unless they are weighing themselves EVERY day and being crazy vigilant, it just whacks right up?!

I do over 10k steps every day plus gym and eat really well. Never drink or eat sugary things.

How?!?! 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

Not allowing your insulin levels to drop long enough to burn any stored energy

ohheytherehi · 30/03/2023 12:04

How much have you gained?

tulipsandteacups · 30/03/2023 12:04

now I’ve hit my 40s the weight gain is real! 😖

bluecrayola · 30/03/2023 12:07

How old are you, OP? Could it be perimenopause?

MathsNervous · 30/03/2023 12:08

I am 40 and gradually the weight has been creeping up. I have not been brave enough to weigh myself 😬 so well done OP.

memyselfi · 30/03/2023 12:11

I actually do weigh myself everyday and if I had a day where I felt I made poor choices I try to balance it out the next day.
I'm not a very active person and could easily gain a stone in a couple of weeks .
It's shit.

NBLarsen · 30/03/2023 12:11

Since I went into perimenopause my weight has just gone up and up. I was already active and eat fine. Seems nothing I do makes a difference to slow the weight gain or reduce it. Hormonal weight gain is a real struggle!

PussBilledDuckyPlait · 30/03/2023 12:12

How old are you, OP?

Sunsetandsmiles · 30/03/2023 12:21

Could be muscle weight if you’re at the gym regularly. Especially if you’re not noticing much difference or feel like you’ve put on weight.
Also, could be hormonal. I put on almost a stone with water weight and bloat at certain times of the month then it all goes again.

tulipsandteacups · 30/03/2023 12:22

I'm 29 :)

It won't be a stone of muscle

MaireadMcSweeney · 30/03/2023 12:27

OP it's really easy to consume a bit above what you burn on a daily basis without feeling like you're overeating or including obviously unhealthy foods. Track your food for a few weeks and see what's happening.

Do you know how hard it is to gain a stone in muscle? It won't be muscle

Wasn’t meaning the full stone would be muscle but if OP is a regular gym goer it will be contributing.

She doesn't say she started going to the gym recently. Women can gain 1-2lbs of muscle when they start going to the gym but it's not a continuous gain.

Actually, it depends how hard you go at it in the gym. I get OP probably isn’t body building or bulking but muscle gain could be contributing.

Not really. As you say unless she's body building (which I assume she's not, as she's confused about the weight gain) she won't be building new muscle above the couple of pounds she built when she started working out. She doesn't say that was a recent thing either.

lpeez · 31/03/2023 11:11

Think about it though. You say you eat really well and don't eat or drink sugary things.

But are you grazing throughout the day? Even milk in tea and even sweeteners cause our insulin levels to spike.

If your insulin levels are up, your body is trying to store energy, and you therefore can't burn anything you already have stored.

It's busy trying to shove more into your fat stores, not release what you already have.

So stop snacking in between meals. Don't eat after 8pm. Look into intermittent fasting where you only eat in a 8 hour window (or less for better results).

The science of it is fascinating. Dr Jason Fung has YouTube videos.

Pollywoddles · 31/03/2023 11:14

You’re eating more than you’re burning, it’s a pretty simple concept although I appreciate, it’s easy to eat more than you need even if it is ‘healthy’ stuff.
