Best way to stop/ lighten periods

Whu · 25/03/2023 07:54

I am having increasingly heavy, long periods (37). I’m travelling for the 6 week summer holidays and during that time I should be getting 2 periods which will both be heavy and around 8 days each which would ruin over 2 weeks of the trip.
Contraception not an issue.
What would you suggest I ask for? I’ve had norehisterone in the past that worked for a week but the next one was super heavy so wouldn’t work for this trip.
Thank you.

You could go on the pill and run the packs together if that works for you.

Alternatively ibuprofen can reduce the blood flow. Transenamic (can't remember how to spell it) from the doctors also reduce blood flow, but I found those hard to take in the day.

For a long term solution (if you're not planning to have any further children / any children) you can have an endometrial ablation. I had mine last year and best thing I've ever done.

I'd get the Mirena Coil fitted. I went from very similar periods to yours to using panty liners for 3 days.

Lucia574 · 25/03/2023 08:24

Mirena coil completely stopped my periods.

AnnaMagnani · 25/03/2023 08:28

Mirena Coil or Progesterone Only Pill.

Did take about 3 months for the spotting to stop but then never had a period again. Bliss.

Or normal pill with no breaks.

motherofkevinnotperry · 25/03/2023 08:29

Another mirena coil user. I still get periods but I'm not anemic and can now leave the house when I have my period.

youngestisapsycho · 25/03/2023 08:31

I take my pill continuously to not have periods.

Whu · 25/03/2023 12:58

Thanks everyone. Looks like I need to ask for the mirena or the pill and start taking soon.
I am already prescribed transamic and it does help a bit but they are still long and heavy and not going to go well with my summer plans including camping and swimming!

Mirena coil 💯 %

PriamFarrl · 25/03/2023 17:39

I’m in the progesterone only pill. I’ve not had a period in 5 years. It’s brilliant.

MamaDollyorJesus · 25/03/2023 17:55

I had the mirena coil for over 15 years (not the same one obviously) & not a single period.

Got my coil removed last year & thought being of a certain age & not needing contraception I'd give my body a break & see how I got on... got a new coil fitted last week as I discovered periods just aren't something I'm willing to put up with anymore.

Baldieheid · 25/03/2023 17:59

mirena coil - stopped mine completely instantly and I had fibroids so was bleeding a scary amount.

I'm menopausal now but still have one for the progesterone part of hrt. I can't pretend getting it in or out was pleasant but it was literally a few seconds of indignity and discomfort then on with my day.

I take tranexanic acid tablets for my periods! It works absolutely wonders.

Just take 2/3 tablets a day depending how heavy I am and it completely lightens it and helps with cramps! Couldn't recommend them enough and you can take them when you want

Mrsworried1 · 25/03/2023 22:47

For everyone saying the coil- how long did this take to settle? I’ve bled every day for 8 weeks now. Im not feeling hopeful as I have struggled with this type of bleeding for years now (bleeding between periods and randomly) the mini pill only made it worse (bled for 7 months solid before giving up) and I have a feeling this is going to be the same x

BitsAndBaubles · 25/03/2023 22:51

@Whu i was prescribed tranexamic acid it's been absolutely brilliant at controlling the heavy periods

MamaDollyorJesus · 26/03/2023 16:10

@Mrsworried1 mine have always been pretty instant.

Coil was fitted on Wednesday, my period is due tomorrow & I'm not expecting it to come.

Stormystar · 26/03/2023 16:29

I have tranexanic acid tablets from the Gp. They really do help, they’re much lighter and don’t last long at all now

FLOWER1982 · 26/03/2023 16:57

Mirena coil. I had unbearably heavy periods that were really debilitating. Tried tranexamic acid but still pretty heavy. Had the coils fitted in January. It took a couple of months to settle with bleeding on and off but period due today and nothing has happened. Very hopeful they will disappear soon. Best thing, wish I’d don’t it sooner.

Whu · 26/03/2023 20:02

Thanks all.
Everyone who has had help from tranexamic acid is very lucky - it barely does anything for me Sad.

I think I’m going to ask about the pill for ease, and if that fails then the mirena.

What mg was you predicted?
