Period clots all day

Sorry for the TMI, I have googled this but can't find an answer.

Since DC3 and getting my period back around 3 years ago they are getting heavier and heavier. I always had heavy ones, but this was worse and comes with awful constipation, thigh pain and cramps.

About 12 months ago I started getting small clots, very dark red. These have gradually got bigger and about 6 months ago they were occasionally around the size of my palm, but flat, if you know what I mean.

I went to the GP and she agreed this was odd so I had blood tests and an ultrasound. Bloods were fine apart from mild anaemia and the ultrasound was all clear apart from a "bulky uterus" which is apparently no cause for concern - no fibroids or cysts and still ovulating.

The bigger clots have continued each month and today have been absolutely relentless, they are literally falling out when I go to the toilet. Weirdly they don't come out on the pad, but I can feel them moving down and then I go to the loo and they drop out.

I feel like this isn't normal cos I can't find it on Google, but the tests are fine. Is this normal? I feel ok in myself but a bit anxious about this. I'm 38 if that is of relevance.

It was normal for me as I got heavier periods and it was absolute hell. Out of interest, did they test your thyroid when you had blood tests? The Dr prescribed me tranexamic acid for my heavy periods to try to reduce the bleeding but I still always had the huge clots. Sometimes so big and heavy they stayed at the bottom of the toilet after flushing!

I did end up with fibroids and, when I eventually had a hysterectomy in my 40’s, it turns out I also had endometriosis. You have my sympathy because it was hell & I was on prescription iron tablets for 15 years.

Thank you for your reply @ReallyReallyRealThings

No I didn't have my thyroid tested, is that something I should ask for?

I'm scared to go to bed, it just keeps coming!

Thyroid issues can cause heavier periods & clots. I do have thyroid issues but treated with medication so, in theory, they should then have returned to normal but never did.
I know how you feel, I used to sleep on a big folded up bath towel each month, and still had to dash to the bathroom 3-4 times a night! I hope you manage to find an effective treatment/solution. It really is awful having to suffer like that each month.

without adequate thyroid hormones, women also make fewer coagulation factors necessary to prevent heavy periods. This causes women to experience flooding (losing a lot of blood in a short period of time), increased blood clots, and heavy or prolonged periods.

Oh that's really interesting, I will definitely ask about thyroid then. Thanks.

Last night wasn't too bad and today has been fine, I think there was nothing left after yesterday's horror show!

Used to suffer similarly, had a marina coil fitted and like magic it all vanished! Rarely bleed at all, and if so, it so light as to be barely noticeable, worth a try maybe?

JJ8765 · 17/03/2023 23:53

Had same at 44/45. Mirena coil fitted and no bleeding for several years now.

wejammin · 20/03/2023 20:21

Thanks, I will speak to GP about that.

If you don't get to see the GP until after your next period it might be worth trying to photograph in all its gory horror. (Use an old sieve to fish out of the loo.) DD had awful problems and the GP was so dismissive about periods just being like that until she took her phone in and forced them to watch the slide show.

wejammin · 21/03/2023 14:35

I did actually get a photo of one of the biggest ones, I think I was so shocked by the size that I took a photo in case I questioned myself later about how bad it was!

@wejammin - definitely take the photo with you and insist your GP looks at it and tell them how many other clots like that you are getting. It was literally the only way DD was able to get the GP to take her seriously.

Found this thread after having a look to see if any threads had similar to me.

I've just had a gynae appointment today after two years of waiting. I also have clots that are getting worse. It truly is an awful feeling isn't it when you can feel it falling out etc.

In my appointment I've had an examination and a sample taken and waiting on an ultrasound.

NewNormalLife · 29/03/2023 00:49

I have a scan soon for this reason too. I was told I had a polyp a couple of years ago after experiencing heavy bleeding but fell pregnant before it could be removed. since my period came back its been super heavy. if no polyps are revealed, I've been told to have the mirena coil fitted as others have said.
