Mirena coil removal

Princetongirl · 02/03/2023 22:14

Hi, I’m due to have my mirena coil removed within the next couple of months and I’m starting to dread it.
After a rocky start I’m on my 2nd one and it’s been great, no periods for 10 years.
im 52 , and dreading heavy periods returning and also if menopause symptoms worsen without it. Does anyone have any experience?
thanks

Why not have a new one? It's offered as beneficial to menopausal women.

I had a new one last year at the age of 54. It'll protect my womb until I'm through menopause.

Surely you can get another fitted? If it’s working for you, why not?

Princetongirl · 02/03/2023 22:25

Wow really, I was under the impression from the doctor who fitted them that I could only have 2, I didn’t realise you could keep going

I’m on my third and this one is due out in October, will be asking for the fourth.

Thank you everyone for your replies, I’m definitely going to see about a replacement

I’m 52 and had mine 6 years when I asked about replacement the gp said if it’s still working and aren’t getting bleeding they just leave it in now until 55 when it’s assumed periods will have stopped anyway. They said only to come back before 55 if there’s any concerns.

I’m 51 and have just had one fitted for HRT.

Seryse · 03/03/2023 15:57

I work in obs and gynae, they regularly advise/fit them for women as the delivery of the progesterone component for HRT. You can have another fitted when you have that one removed if it works for you and causes no issues for you. Definitely get back to your gp/gynaecologist and ask about it if it's worked well for you.

Ribeebie · 03/03/2023 15:59

If you had it fitted after aged 45 and are only using for contraception or bleeding control (so specifically not as part of HRT) then it can stay in until age 55 rather than needing to come out at 5yrs. If it's working for you then you can keep it!

You might already have seen/know this info, but thought was worth popping the link in for you anyways just incase.

Thanks for the links and replies, I feel a lot better reading up on it and I’ll contact my gp
