Hysterectomy Confusion

I've had a consultation with a gynaecologist today which has left me so confused.

A bit of background:
I have elevated blood results for Ca125 of 53 which prompted a vaginal ultrasound. The ultrasound showed a possible ovarian cyst so I was referred to MRI.

MRI shows multiple large fibroids and adenomyosis. However due to my age and having a mirena coil I no longer suffer any symptoms and the fibroids and adenomyosis do not cause any problems at all.

I was told I don't have cancer.

So I've been asked if l want to go ahead and have an abdominal hysterectomy (needs to be abdominal due to size of fibroids)

I asked why this would be a benefit and the only answer I got was so they could do a biopsy... on what? I was told I didn't have cancer and believe fibroids arnt cancerous... right??

I'm getting a 2nd blood test to see what my ca125 levels are doing.

I'm going to call the hospital tomorrow to see if I can speak to the consultant again

Anyone got any idea why I've been offered a hysterectomy for fibroids that aren't bothering me.... It's not like the NHS can really afford to do unnecessary surgery!!

Are you sure it wasn’t hysteroscopy they meant?

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 20/02/2023 18:23

What symptoms were you having to prompt the original blood tests?

No definitely a full abdominal hysterectomy... they sent me away with the pamphlet today

Get rid of it then no more coils! They could get bigger or start causing pain.
I had a massive one for a few years, had womb out in october and feel amazing.

Bloating... but I'm 99.9999 % sure that was stress related and the origin reason I went to the GP.

I have had no symptoms of stress for about two months since the cause was removed. I feed absolutely fine!

They will be making your abdomen stick out and squashing your organs even if no symptoms.

The fibroids look massive... like a bag of satsumas!
My stomach looks absolutely fine at the moment!

I know when I had my hysterectomy they biopsied everything afterwards, even though cancer hadn't been suspected. I was in horrendous pain though (all the same things you've mentioned) and frankly couldn't wait to be rid of the lot.

My guess would be they are concerned you might be in pain in future - you mention your age; are you post-menopausal?

I'm not in any pain.... that's why I'm confused it's been offered.
No idea if I'm post menopausal.... I have a mirena coil so no periods for the last 7 years.. however I'm currently in the thick of horrendous menopause symptoms.

I think you best approach is to ask your consultant exactly why this has been suggested. It's not likely to help your menopause symptoms. Apart from pain, the other possible symptom is heavy periods and flooding, but your mirena is obviously solving that for you.

All the shit symptoms of adenomyosis have passed now. Now I have the mirena!! However i would have had a hysterectomy in a heart beat when I was younger if it was offered to be.. but back then no doctor would take my period symptoms seriously.

You can't make this shit up!

You are right... I need to ask!
Hopefully they will entertain talking to me ....again!

fibroids don’t go away and will start causing you pain and can cause other problems
if you have been offered a hysterectomy they it lightly but have it done
the recovery And be hard and long but it’s worth it

Sortmylifeout52 · 17/11/2023 10:43

Ah old thread, but echo what the previous poster has said. Fibroids are the work of the devil! They can grow, press on the bowel, bladder, cause bleeding and pain.

Having a hysterectomy is the only sure way to get rid!
