Tell me your contraception experiences

I am in need of a new form of contraception. I've used the pill and the implant. Im considering the copper coil but what worries me is that it can cause heavier, longer periods which is what happened to me on the implant. I've been considering the patch, injections or the coil and wanted to know if any of you have experience with these contraceptions. I know we all have different reactions to contraceptions but i just think it would help me hearing others experiences. I don't know anyone who has used the patch and only know one person who has been on the injection.

I have had the coil and although I know everyone has a different experience - mine was honestly horrendous 🙈 so not to put you off as I know it does really work for some, but you've asked for experiences so... I only had it in for maybe 8 months, I experienced really bad cramps that would be so painful I lost my appetite and couldn't sleep properly (as well as heavy bleeding on and off) for maybe 4 months of that time... it had dislodged and twisted into my womb, I had to have an hysteroscopy to have it removed 🙈

So yeah, horror... BUT that doesn't mean you'll experience that, they can be super easy peasy for some!

Copper coil here. Yes periods are longer and heavier (8-9 days now as opposed to my usual 7 days) but it doesn’t screw with my mood or libido and best of all, lasts for 10 years. Hormonal contraception stopped agreeing with me a few years ago so I gave it a go. I also switched to a menstrual cup to cope with the heavier periods and it has been a game changer.

Copper coil. Periods exactly the same. No fuss. No hormones. No remembering. For 10 yrs.

Not great having it put in but small price to pay.

I'm 50 now so when this one comes out that'll be it for me. I've had copper coils for 17 yrs

I really want to get the copper coil because it'll be the most convenient. We want to wait a good few years before having anymore children right now. I seem to hear more negative than positive on the coil! I might try the patch for a bit and see how i go using that i think you just change them once a week. Would love to hear people's experience on the patch and injections.

I was on the Depovera injection for about a year. At first it was good - really easy assuming you're fine with needles and you just had to remember to go back every 3 months for a top up.
However after a few months I noticed I looked really bloated. I thought at first I was just eating too much, but I'm pretty sure it was the injections. I had other side effects as well so decided to stop it. The hormones were just too much.

I went to a sexual health clinic for advice and they recommended an IUS. I wasn't sure about the hormones again but they said it was a tiny amount released. Getting it fitted was very painful and I nearly fainted! But since then I wouldn't know it was there. They said my periods would stop but they have still been coming, albeit pretty irregularly and not too heavy.

I've tried the copper coil before and that was dreadful because of the heavy periods etc. This seems to be ok and just need to replace every 5 years which im not looking forward to!

My ideal would just to use condoms every time but can't see DH wanting that Hmm
