Diazepam and cervial screening - is it helpful?

Hi,

Went for my smear today which was so painful. They are always awful, always so painful and take ages as so many issues with access etc. The nurse was utterly lovely and very patient thankfully. She has said that she may not have got what she needed (did her best) and I am already stressing about going back. The nurse suggested diazepam if I do have to return. Has anyone had any success with this for smear tests?

I know I have to have it done an do go, but so many bad experiences have just made it a million times worse.

Thanks

I didnt use it for my smear and like you found it very uncomfortable, i was called back for a colposcopy due to abnormal cells and found it really helped make it much more bearable.

I also found it really helpful when I went for a colposcopy. I was going through some really awful personal stuff too at the time ( sudden unexpected bereavement) but floated almost blissfully through the procedure.

Thank you so much @Chlobo89 and @aswellascanbeexpected , really appreciate it. Will ask for it for future smears and if referred on. Really hope you both have good outcomes post colposcopy.

I spoke to a doctor before mine as the pain the previous time was unbearable. She booked me in with their most experienced nurse who tried but could see I was in agony so stopped and prescribed some pessaries which I used daily for a few weeks then went back. It was far less painful after that.

purplepandas · 17/01/2023 21:45

Thank you @Anjelika , never heard of that being a thing. V glad they worked for you. Will ask too if needed.

It does bug me that people say it is a couple of mins discomfort as that is not the case for all. That has not er been my experience. I do know it has to be done though of course ( for me anyway, individual choice).

im with you, smears were awful and I can only describe the pain as like intense burning. As a result I couldn’t get through them. I felt so ashamed as everyone acted like they were no big deal.

My Dr prescribed low dose diazepam and it definitely worked for me. This was along with the nurse using a small sized speculum. I’m 5ft0 and it turns out my cervix is close / tilted so the longer speculum always scraped it horribly. The difference was amazing, I actually understood why people said ‘mild discomfort’ rather than hideous torture! 🤣
