Anyone else having breast investigations?

MrsMikeHeck · 13/01/2023 12:25

2ww refer all just after Xmas. Mammogram last Friday and now have more follow up scans next Friday - a magnified mammogram and an ultrasound. From what I can gather, there’s no need to panic. Lots of non serious reasons for more investigations. But obvs I’m still concerned.

I’ve had a really tough 12 months and started a new job this week. I feel like the now job could be the turning point for things getting better, and Im thrown by this curve ball.

Anyone else awaiting breast investigations?

I had a 2ww referral, appt yesterday. Did 4 pics of each boob then ultrasounds.

Was there for 3 hours. I have cysts that they don't aspirate any more, told to take ibuprofen and evening primrose to deal with the pain and lumpiness, nothing else to worry about. Frustrated but relieved.

Most breast problems aren't serious but the worry is horrendous.

MrsMikeHeck · 13/01/2023 13:14

I’m really pleased that you know there is nothing to be concerned about - hope the pain starts to get better.

Did they feedback to you on the day? I’ve paid for private ultrasounds for other things before, and sonographer always told me on the spot what they could see.

When I had mammogram last week, obvs they don’t tell you anything, but I’m wondering if they will for my ultrasound appointment next week? I know they can’t really give 100% info either way, but would rather walk away with some info.

Me - being seen Tuesday evening for a lump under my arm pit. Wasn’t put on 2 week pathway as gp says “likely cyst” but the worry is unbelievable. What prompted your referral? Here to hand hold xxx

MrsMikeHeck · 20/01/2023 09:49

Hey @mulberrybag5 I hope the next few days pass quickly for you. How long have you been waiting for the appointment?

Was due to have my ultrasound and magnified mammogram this morning but ultrasound doctor is ill so have just had mammogram only. Gutted cause just want to know. I’ve had a rough year, started new job last week and feel like things are starting to get better but just want to know either way now. I have been rebooked for 8am Monday - so that’s good. Just got to get through weekend.

Fingers crossed all goes well for you

I was called in for further tests following my first routine mammogram now I've turned 50!

Had the routine test 15/12, was in on 16/01 for more mammograms, examination and ultrasound as righty had some tissue mass that they've decided after extra magnified mammo is normal for me, lefty has some calcifications so they did a biopsy then (I was in for about 2-3 hours, excellent service and team and they popped in a marker for future scans). The aftercare nurse made me an appointment to go back tomorrow for the results which they say could be either 1) normal for me 2) needs more invest or 3) early stage cancer in which case they'd book me in to have a partial removal of tissue...

The waiting is frustrating but I feel lucky that they are so well organised and it's not too long between appointments...

MrsMikeHeck · 24/01/2023 19:00

I hope tomorrow goes okay @Mrscaptainraymondholt . It’s great that they booked in your next appointment while you were there. I imagine the wait has felt really long, but it’s nearly over now.

Everyone at the scan department at my hospital were great too. The administrator were really lovely and I started imagining working there! The nurse helping with the ultrasound and biopsy was awesome too.

After the first click of the biopsy thing, I asked if there were going to be more and the doctor said oncology like lots of samples. I did freak a bit at the word oncology.

Good luck for tomorrow @Mrscaptainraymondholt

Thank you. Well it’s not great news but not as bad as it could be and we have a plan…

The biopsy has come back to say that I have ‘Invasive Ductal carcinoma in situ, grade 2, oestrogen positive but negative for HER2 receptors’. It’s very small so they can excise that and I shouldn’t need chemo but likely to need some radiotherapy.

They’ve booked me in to the surgeon next week and I have to have another biopsy before then as they want to check the surrounding tissue to help inform what amount to take off.
They will also take out some lymph nodes to check and make sure it’s all nicely contained.
They’ve said that the op should be within 4 weeks or so but that I will get the date from the surgeon next week

staying positive !

MrsMikeHeck · 25/01/2023 21:33

Im really sorry. I hope you have an okay evening and that you can stay positive.

What day is your appointment next week? 4 weeks does feel like a long way off right now - but with appointments, being in the system and having a plan, I hope these next few weeks go okay. Do check back into this thread if you can.

Ive got on an appointment next Monday following this weeks biopsy. I’m trying not to Google whether that’s as ominous as it sounds.

I'm sorry you've had the news - the waiting is awful- I was diagnosed neatly 2 weeks ago with invasive lobular breast cancer - I've since had a MRI and now waiting to see the Consultant . When they diagnosed the cancer they said I would need a lumpectomy and radiotherapy plus some ongoing meds. I was so shocked as I wasn't expecting it - picked up on a yearly mammogram- no lump at all as very small .

I hope things go well for you

MrsMikeHeck · 27/01/2023 14:46

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis @ReindeerBelieve. When is your consultant appointment? Hopefully you don’t have long to wait.

Hi, can I join in please.
So sorry to hear of all your diagnoses.
I had my first routine mammogram 2 wks ago, I'm 52, and I received a letter today calling me in for an appointment for further tests on Monday, obviously I'm shitting myself!!!

Riverlee · 02/02/2023 01:21

@Anniecott Sending hugs.

Are they doing more tests or repeating the ones they had? If repeating, that’s fairly common. Maybe because the image was blurred or not very good picture. I’ll be surprised if they carry out different tests without a consultation first

Anniecott · 02/02/2023 12:39

@Riverlee
Doing more tests apparently, this wasn't my first mammogram as I have been to the one step clinic twice for an abnormal nipple which was fine, so they have previous mammograms to check against.
They have said to bring someone with me.

Riverlee · 02/02/2023 13:27

Ok, that doesn’t sound so good.

All I can say is that not all lumps are sinister, and even ones that have proven to be breast cancer doesn’t mean it’s all bad news. Obviously you’d rather not go down that route, but most (over 80%?) breast cancers are curable.

I had it ten years ago and am still here.

Let me know how you get on.

MrsMikeHeck · 02/02/2023 17:31

Hey @Anniecott good luck for Monday. What time is the appointment? Prepare yourself mentally for a biopsy, then you will be pleasantly surprised if there isn’t one 😄

I get my results on Monday am. Three days to go.

OP posts:
Anniecott · 02/02/2023 19:08

Thanks. I'm always worst case scenario, so I'm preparing myself, it's the waiting that's the worst. I'm down a giant rabbit hole at the moment as I'm also waiting for further tests to see if I have MS, I've recently had a procedure on my spine due to degenerative discs which hasn't worked, so 2023 has got off to a fabulous start 😩

Riverlee · 02/02/2023 21:17

The waiting is definitely the worse.

Can you plan something nice to do afterwards or on Tuesday so you have something else to focus on?

Chocolateismyfavourite · 02/02/2023 22:26

Hi all, just wanted to come on and show some solidarity. I'm on the other side of some of you.
I got diagnosed with triple negative grade three breast cancer at the end of August, started 12 weeks of weekly chemo on 26 September and had a mastectomy on December 30th. I'm now cancer free 😁 I do have to have some radiotherapy, but I have to have a (benign) tumour removed from my heart (the surgery for that is on the 9th, an incidental finding they called it) first and recover from it before the radiotherapy ( preventative apparently)

Just wanted to shared a positive outcome with you all.

Remember to ask all the questions you want to- I work better knowing all the facts, write a list down and take it with you. And yes the waiting is the worst, distract yourself as much as you can, easier said than done I know.

jannier · 02/02/2023 22:36

Another positive story I had grade 4 triple neg. Had lumpectomy node removal chemo and rads worked right through and I'm still clear 8 years later. The worst part was always the waiting happy to hand hold xxxx

Anniecott · 02/02/2023 22:49

Thank you all, the positive stories are doing me wonders.
@Riverlee I'm keeping Monday free as I've no idea how I will feel but my husband has taken the day off work so may well do something after all depending, Tuesday I'm working, I'm a hairdresser and fully booked, so it's difficult. X

Mrscaptainraymondholt · 03/02/2023 19:14

Good luck for Monday @Anniecott !

I had my consultant appointment yesterday and she was lovely. Explained in detail what they want to check before deciding how much to take so I’m in for another biopsy next Friday (10th) and the results will take 10 days - they’re looking at the calcifications now rather than just the duct but I have to meet her surgeon on the 1st March who will review the results and talk me through what he’ll actually do and the op is all pencilled in for 17th March! So quick but it’s good to have a plan and steps along the way.

lovely to hear success stories too - would be good to know what people advise getting for recovery and what to avoid spending money on!

Sally543 · 04/02/2023 08:01

I’ve had my appointment yesterday and luckily I got the all clear. I’d like to tell people not to worry but I know it’s human nature everyone there look really nervous three other people before me all came out looking very relieved but I know not everyone does. I still have a sore bust and no real explanation as to why but the consultant is sure it’s nothing sinister. Don’t panic if you have to have a mammogram it’s just a precaution in a lot of cases. I feel a bit of fool now .Hopefully everyone else waiting will get good news as well.

I found keeping working kept my mind off it and I was also tiered enough to sleep. Good luck.

I had a lumpectomy and I'm big busted so a supportive bra was important wasted so much money on trying to get a comfortable one. For the first week I lived in a couple of tea shirt type tops with built in support.
Do your excercises without fail from day one.
