Looking for a bit of reassurance and support.

I posted a few weeks ago as I had a period that had lasted from the 2nd -23rd December and I was anxious about this.

I am almost 42 and was reassured by people here that they had been through similar.

My period stopped for a day and I then had a gush of blood and passed a blood clot.

I made an appointment with my GP who examined me internally, felt my stomach and took some bloods. She also referred me to the gynagology department and I have an appointment in February.

All my blood tests have come back normal (she checked hormones, full blood count, thyroid, liver function, renal function)

My period stopped and now just 9 days later I have gone to the bathroom and I am bleeding again. I'm absolutely terrified that this is something really bad and I can't barely get through the day without having a panic.

Can anyone please reassure me if they have had similar and it turned out to be something innocent.

It's probably peri menopause.

Mine went the other way, getting few and far between until stopping.

Thank you, I wasn't sure if my hormones being 'normal' would make it less likely

Shameless bump.

I think it's the case that the blood test results gor hormones are useless as they only give a snapshot of what's happening at that moment, and they can vary wildly from day to day.

Very likely to be perimenopause but I can see why you're worried as its such a big change.

Can you phone and askvt9 be put on a cancellation list maybe, so you get peace of mind sooner?

You didn't get an Ultrasound to check for fibroids, uterus lining?

YeOldeTrout · 07/01/2023 20:56

i had bleeding for weeks. i want to say 10 weeks, but i forget now. June-August... GP said these rules to me about prolonged vag bleeding:

"age under 50?" -> normal in peri, very rarely means cancer
"age over 60?" -> very concerning, urgent to check it
"age 50-59?" -> could be anything.

i was age mid 50s so got lots checks: nothing bad found. Very healthy uterus, actually, although many small fibroids could have contributed to the bleeding. Am pretty sure it was cervical erosion in my case. It stopped.

Hi. I'm in a similar boat to you. I'm 47. I stopped taking my pill about a year ago as wasn't sure if I was going through peri/menopause etc.
I have had lots of frequent bleeding where I would bleed for a 3/4 days then stop then it started getting longer and more frequent until one time it had been about 12 days and was showing no signs of stopping so the doctor prescribed me some Norhisterone to try and stop the bleeding. She also referred me for a internal vaginal scan. The scan showed my uterine lining i think it was was thicker than normal. She said the doctor might need to do some more tests but when I phoned up for the results i was told it was normal. The person who did the scan did say something about if I was at such and such stage then it's normal but if I'm not then it's not then I would require more tests. I can't remember exactly what she said though but as the doctors receptionist told me normal I'm guessing it's ok.

Anyway I had been bleeding lighter and for less time since taking the Norehisterone but recently I've started bleeding more regularly and for longer. I started bleeding again about 4 days ago so far and so far not showing any signs of letting up.I'd only finished bleeding about 2 weeks before that and had o lay been for about 3 days but it's getting linger again which worries me after last time. I'm worried I will get anaemic or something if we keep bleeding. Am just waiting and seeing at the moment.

@Whatineed no the gp mentioned an uss and said I would get that in about 4 weeks but the gynae appointment would take longer.
As it happens I've not got an ultrasound appointment through but got a letter inviting me for a hysterscope and a consultation with the hlgynae doctor about 6 weeks later.

I had exactly this which ended in a haemorrhage. Like you I was absolutely terrified but it turned out to be a uterine polyp which was removed and I had a coil fitted. It's very likely going to be hormone related, fibroids or polyp at your age. I sympathise with you as I worried myself sick too but periods are all over the place at this age.

Well it's good to hear its planned - from my experience this will give a lot more light on the situation.

GP might be able to provide mefenamic acid to manage your blood loss if it's too high too.

I'd always had regular periods but they went haywire at 42. Started having really short cycles sometimes (2 weeks between periods), either really light bleeding or really heavy bleeding with clots. Every cycle now I have about 2 episodes of a gush of blood accompanied by a big clot. Nothing is wrong with me, just the perimenopause.
