Vaginal bleed, scan and now clinic visit

Really scared. I’m post meno, on hrt and 57. Out of blue got a small bleed. Referred in 2w pathway to hospital to gynae oncology . Had scan but was told appt would be separate as consultant sees scan first and then they triage. This was before Xmas. I was starting to relax a bit until today I got phone call for appt. Said they had a cancellation if I could come tomorrow.

Am now really scared. One because appt seems so urgent (though it is on 2w pathway so maybe this is normal) and two, because they must have seen something or why call me in? Or maybe they would have to see me anyway??

any advice? Ideas? Handhold? experiences?

Try not to get yourself in too much of a tizz, there are so many things it could be, and the majority of them nothing sinister. All the best x

Ok thanks. I will just have to resign my self to a sleepless night!

I would ask for pain relief as some women find the procedure painful.

Join Menopause Facebook group where you will find loads of experiences. It could just be a polyp or a fibroid. Post menopausal bleeding on HRT is really common. X

They have only sent me an appointment. They haven’t mentioned any procedure? Is it likely they will do a biopsy? Without warning me first?

They MAY want to do a biopsy and if so, please do say yes to pain relief (Pop a sanitary towel in your bag as well) I am not saying this to frighten you, just to say, look, it is routine to have a look 'up there' if timing is a bit tight, (the 2 week thing) and if they do want a peep, it might nip a bit without pain relief and you might bleed a bit from the pokings-about.

Handhold in the meantime [holds out hand]

Thanks

The not warning about biopsy is more common nowadays ime (not just me but other fam members) The postal system is really rubbish, hosp admin staff sometimes stockpile letters for a couple of days so the letter arrives after the appointment (BTDT) and so on.

Tonight mainline chocolate, have a share bag of crisps all to yourself, maybe a toot of whiskey at bedtime (set your alarm!)

mummybear2104 · 05/01/2023 17:05

Try not to be alarmed. I had similar with the breast clinic, I was shocked to suddenly get a phone call and a request that I was seen within the two week period (Gp had said routine) but turns out it was standard as anyone experiencing my kind of breast symptoms was seen under 2 week protocol. I would expect there is a similar protocol in gynae.

TiredButAlive · 05/01/2023 17:06

I had the same thing .... well actually I had a pretty huge bleed, similar to the flooding I had in peri. They just did a vaginal ultrasound, confirmed the uterine lining was nice and thin again and told me not to worry. Apparently it's not "that" unusual to have a bleed after menopause (2.5 yrs in my case). Your body can have a surge of oestrogen that causes the womb lining to build up but it always needs to be checked out .... SMALL risk of there being an issue but always best if caught early. You are also on HRT which can play a part. Good luck.

I ot an appointment and had to call to find out what it was for. It was for a hysteroscopy! I said I wanted a general anaesthetic if that was the case. I then spoke to the consultant who said they would look at the scan results first then decide if I needed a hysteroscopy or not.

Railwayroad · 05/01/2023 17:10

Thanks all. I guess I’m more worried as have had the scan and they have called me in for appointment after this. The radiologist said they triage the scan results. So surmising that the scan not clear if they still want to see me. But hoping they have to see me anyway? A scan on its own is not really a full assessment is it?

I've had two of these two week pathways after two separate bleeds. The words Gynae and Oncology aren't two you want to hear in the same sentence. But both mine were fine. Two good looks and a hysteroscopy. Take a hot water bottle for the car ride home. That helped me hugely.
Good luck x

Movinghouseatlast · 05/01/2023 17:22

It depends on your Trust policy, you can look that up on the internet. Some do a hysteroscopy as a matter of course others don't. 'Not clear' though could mean anything- polyp, thickened lining etc and not anything serious necessarily.

The fact is they don't know much about the causes of post menopausal bleeding so they apply 'belt and braces' is what I was told.

Knowledge is power so do have a look at the Facebook group.

Railwayroad · 05/01/2023 17:34

What is the Facebook group called please? There are quite a few meno FB groups. Thank you.
