Bizarre long period on Tranexamic acid - please help

Fellow Tranexamic acid users, did anyone get a bizarre long period after using tranexamic acid early in their cycle?

I am perimenopausal and have shorter 20-21 day cycles with heavy flow on day 2 / 3. I have historically taken just one pill of Tranexamic acid each on days 2 and 3 of my cycle and it has really helped, although did seem to lengthen my period by a day.

In my current cycle, i started spotting a day before a long haul flight, so i took 2x Tranexamic acid pills on day 1 pre-emptively. Another 2 on day 2. Hardly any flow in the first 4 days - just spotting. i wondered if it would just stop after that. But the flow has continued- varying quantity - for 15 days since i first started spotting. It has now been light to moderate for the past 6 days and still no end in sight.

I have spoken to my GP who has no idea if TA could have caused this and has referred me for an urgent scan. Would be really helpful to know if TA usage has turned anyone else's cycle wonky. Really scared it could be something sinister although i had a clear smear test 6 months ago. Thank you.

I found TA to be ineffective at stopping the flow of bleeding and the cause really needs to be properly determined. You should really be seeing a gynaecologist.

The cause of my ongoing peri menopausal bleeding was constant up and down fluctuations in both progesterone and estrogen levels What actually stopped it in the end was having ablation surgery performed.

Re a gynae if you have the means to pay to see such a person for an initial consultation do so. I suggest this as well as waiting times on the NHS for gynae are miles long.

@AttilaTheMeerkat thank you. Yes, i could see someone privately since have insurance. I should get a scan within 2 weeks via my GP referral i think. It's just that this sort of longer period has never happened before and TA has previously worked well to lessen flow on the worst days.

I recently had bloods done (for insomnia and generally feeling exhausted- potentially all by-products of perimenopause). Apart from a high midcycle fsh (17) others were largely normal.

I have been reading up on endometrial ablation - was this covered by insurance in your case? Not sure since could be an elective procedure.

My internal ultrasound scan showed a thick uterine lining.

I seem to recall my ablation surgery was paid for through insurance.

Bump. Anyone else faced prolonged light periods after Tranexamic acid?

Hi ... I know this thread is older but, I just wondered how you're doing now?

I'm in the later stage of perimenopause and since August last year 2022, my periods have been absent or light or super heavy (even got sent to A&E by GP).

I've had scans, histeroscopy, biopsy of endometrium was all clear etc, smear is all clear so they've put it down to PM & hormones! Which I agree is likely.

Whenever I've tried to take the mini-pill I bleed lightly pretty much constantly and although not using any now, I am having weeks and weeks of similar light bleeding.

Have today taken Tranexamic acid for the first time and wondered what you're experience is now after a bit of time has passed since you posted?
