Cervical ectropion & colposcopy

Hi all,

I'm 23 years old and this month I started getting some spotting at various points in my cycle. I went to the GP last week and she examined me and said she thinks I've got a cervical ectropion. She says it's harmless and will probably go away on its own within a few months. She took some swabs for infection and said if they come back negative she will refer me to have a colposcopy as it's standard procedure for any spotting.

She did say an ectropion is very common for women on the pill (I've been taking it for the last 4 years). Apart from the slight spotting, I haven't had many symptoms, a tiny bit of period like pain but nothing major. The colposcopy referral will take between 6-8 weeks she said, and I'm just so scared something more sinister could be brewing for all that time.

I suffer with health anxiety and it doesn't help that as I'm 23, I've never had a smear test. I have seen lots of posts saying as long as your smears are up to date you shouldn't be worried but that doesn't apply in my case. I've had the HPV vaccine and I've only had 2 partners in my life so I'm hoping it's genuinely nothing serious.

Just looking for a hand hold I guess as I can't stop thinking about it. Has anyone else been through this?

I had this OP- had been on the pill a while and was bleeding during/after sex. My smear was due so I mentioned it at the appt, went for colposcopy and it was fine- both the procedure and the results, ectropian. It's always a worry but the chances are it's a harmless ectropian. You're doing the right thing getting checked out but try not to let it worry you too much, it really is common Flowers

Thank you for your reply. I know it's so unlikely to be anything sinister especially given my age but anxiety really can get the better of me sometimes. Glad to hear yours all went ok. Thanks for sharing x
