Mirena and menopause

My Mirena expires soon. At 56 I don't think I need it for contraception. I still need the progesterone for HRT. I've been on continuous, transdermal oestrogen until now. I do not want to take oral HRT and definitely do not want to have any form of periods. What options are available to me?

I'm awaiting an appointment with the gynae nurse, but Mumsnet has such a wealth of knowledgeable women, it is a good place to start my research.

I have no idea but bump. I think mirena would equL
periods? For a while at least.

I use a mirena and have done for the last two years. I’m 58. I did use utrogestan before but now prefer the mirena.

My Mirena has expired and I’m on oral HRT which is fine at the moment. But as I’m 49 I have to keep using contraception. I don’t want periods either so am going to get the coil replaced.

Before I started oral HRT I used patches, which actually gave much better results! I just didn’t like the sticky patches they left on my skin.

DeeofDenmark · 27/11/2022 20:13

@Spellcheck surely your progesterone was oral even if your estrogen was through patches?

LadyGardenersQuestionTime · 27/11/2022 20:15

I had a new Mirena put in at 58ish for HRT. It was a bit of a struggle to get it in to be honest, and when it ran out I switched to oral progesterone but Mirena is licensed for HRT and continues with no periods.

I take a combined HRT tablet, but the patches were also combined as my Mirena is 3 years past its hormonal use-by date and I only started HRT a year ago. I’m going to have the Mirena replaced and switch to oral oestrogen.

DeeofDenmark · 27/11/2022 20:47

Ah, I see, I have been advised to take progesterone orally as that is the only one which is body identical.

Utrogestan is supposed to be the gold standard but I developed polyps as it didn’t seem to work for me. Hence the mirena.

Dilbertian · 28/11/2022 07:51

Interesting. I assumed that I would be encouraged away from Mirena due to expense and no requirement for contraception. I find insertion extremely difficult (need diazepam to tolerate it) but always feel it's worth it for the HRT.

I had a Mirena fitted when I was 47 and was told it would 'see me through menopause' and wouldn't need replacing. I'm now 53 with no sign of my periods bloody stopping so am wondering if I need to go and get the Mirena replaced. I can't see myself ever having sex again but have benefitted from regular and light periods for the first time in my life since having the coil fitted!

I had my second Mirena fitted in June at the age of 59 I have used both of them for HRT along with Oestrogel. I react to the adhesive in patches and could not tolerate Utrogestan.

DeeofDenmark · 02/12/2022 20:40

Do you mind me asking what the utrogestan side effects were?

NK346f2849X127d8bca260 · 02/12/2022 23:22

Really restless nights with very vivid dreams, night sweats, needing to go to toilet in night several times. I felt completely not with it during day and felt unsafe to drive. I needed to do school run and go to work so had to abandon it.
