High HCG, DS risk, aged 41

Hi everyone, I hoping someone can offer advice/experiences please.
I am 41 and had a missed miscarriage in Aug. I had a brief period on 8th Sept and no cycle since. Negative pregnancy test the 10th Oct but positive pregnancy test on the 15th.

I had a scan just on Monday gone and I was 9+1, everything looked good and the sonographer said there was no soft markers for DS. I had bloods taken for the NIPT and still awaiting the results.

my question is about my HCG levels;
according to scan dates, @ 5+1 HCG was 23,155 & @7+2 the HCG was 257,396.
The HCG results seem really high for the gestation as per the scan, what on earth is going on?

I had high HCG levels flagged in both my pregnancies. With my second pregnancy, when combined with my age and a slightly higher than normal NF measurement it put my DS risk at 1 in 75. All was fine, I just seem to produce a lot of HCG, it is possible. Did you get PAPP-A results too? Often for DS, there is a combination of High HCG and low PAPP-A. Mine were both high.

Twins?

Thanks for your reply, I’m not sure about the PAPP-A, I just had the panorama test done. Of course I’ve now gone down googling DS and high HCG and my age doesn’t help!

Definitely not twins, just one little baby in there!

I also had really high Hcg and i obsessed about it too. Its so difficult when your baby is so longed for after a loss and you want to do everything you can to just know that things will be OK.
I asked my consultant about Hcg levels and in the nicest possible way she dismissed my worries. She said they would be dar higher that what you or I had. She said Hcg is useful to monitor right at the beginning but once you can see a baby on the scan,the scan is a much better monitoring tool.
As I understand it the Down Syndrome test is about a ratio between Hcg and PappA at a specific time in the pregnancy so high Hcg is not an indicator.

OP, I read so many threads like this and there were always people saying their baby is now here and fine. I never thought that would be me, I was so scared throughout my pregnancy. But here I am saying to you that I had the same worries and fears and experiences and I have a wonderful healthy 7 month old baby now.
You will get there OP.

@possomcandle thank you for such a lovely reply. I don’t really understand the tests as well as I should do so thank you for explaining them. I had my daughter (only child) when I was 19 - no internet, no google, no worries, I wish it was that simple now!
I will patiently wait for the results and cross my fingers it’s a good result.
