Silicone Breast Question (esp after breast reconstruction)

PasturesN3w · 22/11/2022 16:34

My BF has to have a breast removed in a month. She has to have silicone implants as she's too slender for any other type of reconstruction. She's overwhelmed with all this, esp the rapidness of the surgery date, but wants to know a couple of specific things and I said I'd make enq' for her.

What does a silicone breast feel like to have? She's been told they're 'cold'. Will she feel the coldness inside the body or just to the touch from the outside? How have you found having them, do they feel real?

Thanks so much in advance.

I had a mastectomy and reconstruction with a silicone implant a while ago now. The reconstructed breast does feel quite cold to the touch - but I never really notice it, you get used to it so quickly. I got myself referred to a plastic surgeon after the first immediate reconstruction operation, and he's been great for follow-up procedures. One thing they can do is fat grafting - taking fat from another part of your body - flanks in my case - treating it, and injecting it into the reconstruction area. Makes it feel quite a bit warmer and more natural! And some bonus body sculpting! I found the Breast Cancer Care (I think it's now Breast Cancer Now) forums great for advice about reconstruction - so many women have this done,so tell your friend to take a look there. Good luck with it! Sending your friend positive thoughts. I'm actually very happy with my reconstruction now, I hope she will be too with hers.

She will have access to breast reconstruction nurses who should be the people answering any questions she has.

She should not be taking advice off strangers on the internet, however well intentioned.

I say that as someone who had a double mastectomy and full reconstruction last week.

Yes except we're the ones who live with the reconstruction, not the nurses! I found it hugely helpful talking to other women in my position. In fact it was something my specialist nurse facilitated and encouraged. OP - sending best wishes to your friend for her surgery. There's plenty of help and advice out there.
