Time of the month upset stomach

I've been told this is normal so I thought I'd check.

Basically every month when I have my period I get such an upset stomach it takes over my life. I have to work from home because I couldn't manage the commute. I wake up in the wee small hours and have to spend hours in the loo. I'm completely fed up.

I had a phone appointment with the GP and they said it's completely normal and there's nothing they or I can do.

It doesn't seem normal, I wondered if there were any dietary changes I could make that might make things better? I eat a pretty balanced diet, maybe upping or cutting down on fibre for a bit?

I promise I'm not a troll and I'm not looking for stories just suggestions because this is miserable.

Sorry I can't help, but folllwing with interest as this is something I suffer from too.

It is a ‘thing’ unfortunately. Have you tried the pill or coil ?

I can only take the mini pill, it made me bleed constantly so after a few months I came off it again. I've heard such mixed stories about the coil.

Just to clarify you're talking about 'diarrhoea' yes? Yeah pretty normal but you can take normal cheap diarrhoea tablets which can calm down the stomach

KitchenSupper · 08/11/2022 06:52

I haven’t had this after being pregnant but that’s a bit of a drastic solution.
Over the counter meds might help enough to go to work?
Maybe a probiotic?

Hi OP,

Google 'Dr Jen Gunter period poo', she's a brilliant gynaecologist and has spoken about this, and why it happens. It is most definitely a thing, you're not alone!

cosypeppermint · 08/11/2022 06:55

I also have this problem. I still had it when I was on the pill so ended up taking it back to back for years to stop my periods.

It is a thing. Although weirdly it must be linked to the uterus as mine stopped when I had a hysterectomy (kept ovaries).

It is a thing. Holly McNish has written a poem about it!

Try eating less at that time, small portions of healthy, plain food like chicken and potatoes.

Codeine also worked for me, and getting plenty of sleep and trying to minimise stress.

I've tried them before and followed the box to the letter. Didn't find them that helpful but I'll give them another go. I'm so freaking tired.

I take 4 imodium. Instants are better performers than capsules though.

NoHeavenNoMore · 08/11/2022 09:59

Omg this is a thing!? Every month a few days before my period starts I have sweats, upset stomach, feeling sick. Keeps me up all night. I've only had it since having my daughter/having a copper coil fitted
Dread it every single month

It was definitely capsules I had last time. Thank you, I'll get instants to try.

It is a thing unfortunately. I have no advice as to what to do and take as I just deal with it. I give up at this point 🤣😂 x

I get this, it's a clear out before your period begins - perfectly normal. I know it's not pleasant but I WFH on the days I know I'm due on
