Cervical polyp, how long did you wait to be seen?

I've had bleeding between periods and after sex plus generally very heavy periods.
Saw GP they found a polyp on cervix, she said she 'couldn't see the base of it which may be inside the cervix' (Google tells me this may make it a bit more tricky to remove) anyway I was referred to gynaecology but they're not offering me an appointment for 5 MONTHS? This seems like a very very long time ago and obviously I'm worried I'm one of the 1 in 1000 where the polyp is cancerous (gp said it looked fine but I've had CIN2 before so I'm worried it could be back)
Anyway I'm wondering if there's anyone else out there in a similar boat and should I be pushing to be seen sooner?

I had raised ca125 due to endo but the gp didn't read my notes properly and I was put on 2ww. They also thought I had polyps so I was seen within another couple of weeks. Now ruled out I'm on a huge waiting list (12m) for the endo cysts on my ovary. I think you should push

In 2018 I waited 6 months with increasing symptoms and pain.

Inthesky42 · 03/11/2022 21:35

@nicknamehelp I'm sorry to hear you had to wait so long. Was all OK in the end and are you alright now? I know the NHS is struggling with staffing, budgets etc but I didn't realise waiting lists had got so long for something I would think would be relatively urgent.

Could you find out private waiting times?

Individewl · 24/11/2022 20:17

Hi,

I’ve had the same symptoms and GP saw a polyp on my cervix today and has put me under the 2 week pathway for a coloscopy

OnthePiste · 24/11/2022 20:57

My GP put me on 2 week pathway after a polyp was seen during my smear but it was downgraded at triage and I was quoted an 11 month wait! I paid to go privately, no way could I wait that long as I have health anxiety.

Just an update my appointment which was scheduled for April has now been cancelled... I'm worried if I go private about the cost of treatment? Especially if a hysterscopy is required? (they said they couldn't see the base of the polyp and it might be inside the cervix). Also what if they find its cancerous? Am I then prevented from going back to the NHS for treatment? I have no private health insurance and can't afford thousands

Sorry to hear that OP, have they given any indication of when it might be rescheduled for? My private treatment cost me around £500 which included having the polyp snipped off. I didn't have hysterscopy or coloscopy though. You can certainly go back to the NHS for treatment if necessary.

If you can afford it, I would definitely have an initial consultation with a gynecologist, they might be able to see more than the GP and put your mind at rest.

I had what sounds exactly like you have. Was referred by my GP for an appointment, on the 2 week pathway for a colposcopy.

Took 11 months to get that appointment and that was with me hastening and chasing and finally foregoing waiting for a local hospital and going to one an hour away. Add then they didn't even do the colposcopy! Just looked at it and said I would need a hysteroscopy because of it's position, coming out from inside the cervix. Waited another month, I think, for that appointment which was in Nov (for a bit of medieval-style torture imo).

I was told to expect a letter with the results in two weeks and after chasing that up SIX weeks after that appointment, I received my letter, not with results as expected, but with another appointment to go back to the hospital. That appointment is coming up on Tues this week. To say I am anxious about it would be a massive understatement.

However, removing the polyp was really quick and the issues it was causing have all gone, which is nice!

I was 2 years from it being noticed at my smear test to getting an appointment , i was lucky that it was fairly easy to remove and was done at the same appointment

Are you okay now? @Inthesky42
