Myomectomy or hysterectomy?

Hi everyone

I thought I’d start a new thread to see if anyone has any views/experience of this.

I have a very large fast growing fibroid ( we’re concerns about it being cancerous but the view is now that it is not).

Because it is a single large fibroid I’ve been advised by my consultant that I can either have a myectomy to remove it or a hysterectomy ( both would be abdominal not keyhole due to uterus size).

Consultant is very much of the ‘empowering patient to make a decision’ but I think leans towards mysectomy - with the view that it should solve immediate issue, is far less invasive operation with quicker recovery and because I’m peri hopefully won’t get another huge fibroid growing. But he wasn’t very emphatic about this!

Just wondering if anyone else has faced the same decision/had a myectomy at all?

Apologies for my appalling spelling throughout!

I was faced with the same decision and opted for myomectomy. When I can round from the anaesthetic, I was told that they'd done a total hysterectomy as they weren't able to just remove the fibroids. This was about 18 months ago . I was a bit upset at the time , but now I think it was for the best as I should have no further issues. Good luck.

Thanks - yes I have been warned this could possibly happen.

Its a tricky decision isn’t it.

Yes, it's not easy. I couldn't quite explain why I didn't want a hysterectomy, I just know that I didn't. I hope it works out well for you, whatever you decide.

I had a myomectomy for a large fibroid, but was warned that it might end up as a hysterectomy. It turned out ok and I went on to have two children by cesarian and no further fibroids.
I found the recovery relatively straight forward and started a new job two weeks later to the day - I had take the underground and travel across London so wasn't easy but managed it. Good luck with everything 💐

I had a hysterectomy- for me it was life changing however I knew I didn’t want to have any more children. My ovaries were left in so no crashing into menopause. I had 3 massive fibroids

I’m mid 40s and definitely don’t want more children. I only have one large fibroid though which is why the consultant thinks maybe myomectomy might be preferable ( another consultant thought hysterectomy). It wouldn’t be keyhole which I think means chances of re growth are lower.

i have what looks like the start of a fibroma on one ovary so will get that removed ( after the worries about cancer in the fibroid I’d rather lose the ovary).
