When to remove the Mirena coil.

TL;DR How long is too long to have the same Mirena Coil.

I had the Mirena coil inserted in 2015 and they said it should be in for 5 years. It was an instant fix for my ridiculously massive bleeding.
in (early) 2020 I made an appointment for it to be changed and the sexual health nurse asked if it was still working, as in, if my periods were still light and if I was getting any trouble with it. I said it was fine, no issues.

The nurse said, may as well leave it in then as there’s always a risk when removing or inserting a coil so why risk it when there isn’t any issues.

So I’m 44 and it’s going on 7 years with the same coil. I still don’t have issues, period is barely there, so should I have it removed or carry on as normal? Ideally I’d have it taken out completely as my OH has had the snip, but until he gets his act together and sends in a sample to make sure the snip worked, I need to be protected.

So my question is, has anyone had the same coil for over the 5 year BB date?

I had mine for 7 years and was ok.

I had my last one for 7 years which took me to two years after my last period, so past menopause. Prior to that I had three mirena coils, replaced after 5/6 years. As a contraceptive they become less effective after 5 years but not completely.

I've had mine 8.5 years but am 55, my periods have never returned which is not surprising. I might ask about getting it removed next time I have a smear.

Mine has been in for over 13 years!
No periods - hallelujah.
I had it put in at 33.

GP has said it's fine as long as no problems and no sex.

Thanks everyone, I was worrying over nothing then, I was starting to think I’d been given bad advice.

If OH has had the snip, I'd leave it in.

Not exactly your situation, but if it’s being used for contraception I think they would usually change the mirena after 5 years, but it should still work for 7 years.
Other similar hormone coils from different drug companies work for different lengths of time.

If you are relying on a seven-year-old marina coil for protection against pregnancy because your partner hasn't had the test after a vasectomy and I would be worried.

The Mirena coil is a hormonal contraceptive device and after three or five years (brands) it is no longer guaranteed protection against pregnancy even if it is still working for the bleeding issue (which is why I got it too).
