private prescription for valium before coil insertion

I'm absolutely phobic about smears etc but I have a mirena coil and it is amazing. It was pretty traumatic getting it fitted but best thing I ever did so I made an appt to it replaced. Problem is it has already been cancelled twice each time after I have psyched myself up to attend. My appointment is now set for Wednesday at 9am but I got a cancellation text this morning when I rang to try and rebook I was told it wasn't cancelled and then there was total confusion at their end and then they said they would ring me back. I am waiting now and my heart is in my mouth. So I wondered about using a private online GP to get a private prescription for valium to take the edge off but they are so backed up with appointments I am not sure they will get back to me with an answer in time (assuming its not cancelled again). I have used valium once before for a smear with no bad effects. I'm not sure it really helped that much.

Would an online GP who doesn't know me at all give me 5mg of diazepam? HAs anyone used an online GP service. I've been looking at the Lloyds Pharmacy one so it looks legit.

I mean my actual GP has an online system and it says there will be a 3 day wait for a reply. Hence thinking about private

Is it the pain you’re worried about? They put local anaesthetic in for my second one and it was amazing, couldn’t feel a thing. But if it’s general anxiety about it I suppose that might not cover it. Just try to get an appointment in that case would be my advice.

phobicpatient · 17/10/2022 10:07

Yes it's the pain. I have a very high inverted cervix that takes ages to find and involved lots of different speculums being tried out. They say take 2 ibuprofen but it doesn't help at all. But the fact that it keeps being cancelled is making it a lot worse. I was totally fine about it (3rd time lucky and all) but then to hear again it might have been cancelled I am getting anxious and want a back up plan. There is no way I will be able to see my own GP between now and Wednesday morning if my appt hasn't been cancelled. Its a mess.

Can't you ring your normal gp? They will only give you 1 or 2 tablets, but if you can get a telephone call with them it might be easier than the online route

not a chance they will answer the phone let alone agree anything. I understand its not important in the scheme of things and I am happy to pay privately. I'm actually waiting for a call back from a private clinic to have my coil replaced as its getting silly now. I've used 2 days annual leave for this already and about to possibly waste a 3rd.

Make sure you discuss this with them prior

They may ask you to sign a consent form for the coil and decline you as not being able to make that decision due to the affects of a sedative

It's a good idea though , just cover all bases

I think you'd get one from a f2f private gp and possibly online through Babylon (as it's tied to the NHS) but I have a private online gp through work who can't prescribe benzos or z-drugs.

phobicpatient · 17/10/2022 10:45

thanks when I got them before for a smear there was no issue but they knew I had been prescribed. I was scared that I would appear drunk and be turned away but I don't think it has a major "outward" effect. I wasn't dopey by any means I maybe felt a bit mellow and had a headache late. But it seemed to work

Its just the uncertainty now. I've booked a day off again. My husband booked a half day to drive me there and back. So if it does go ahead with/without valium I have a driver it just a waiting game now to know if it is happening. Ahhhhhh

I've checked on the Babylon and they can't prescribe controlled drugs. That's what I expected. I don't want to sign up with a private service for nothing.

I'd be very surprised if a GP with no history of you prescribed diazepam even though I do agree it might be helpful. Have you looked at any advice around calming anxiety in bealthcare scenarios? I used to require sedation for dental work but did a lot of work on preparing myself and now I can manage without. You can elect to have a chaperone in, your DH? A lot of the time phobias/high anxiety is due to the lack of control you have (especially when they are cancelling appointments which won't help) so you having someone you trust can be a big help. Explaining up front that you've had a difficult time previously can help. When I was in the dental sedation clinic I had a dental nurse sitting beside me the whole time reminding me to breath in through my nose and out through my mouth and it was only then I realised how tense I was, its unlikely you would get that service but maybe your DH could help? Another thing that really helps me is putting earphones in, either listen to music or an audio book or affirmations if that helps, just explain to them prior to starting and have a signal that means stop immediately (like raising your hand). Hope it all goes well.

phobicpatient · 17/10/2022 11:07

I've checked with Lloyds and they can't either. I totally understand why they can't. I was just hoping because my own GP gave them once with no side-effects they might do it again. If not I'll just have to cope and just keep reminding myself that it will be worth it. The last thing I want them to do is give up if I ever manage to be seen. My worst fear is them getting half-way and giving up. That has happened before and I think that's the thing that scares me most. Its humiliating and painful to be poked and prodded and told to relax and told to move to this mad position and that and then for them to declare my cervix is missing/hiding/winking etc etc. When I booked this appt the nurse said let's hope we can get you sorted so it didn't inspire much confidence.

Could you get your coil changed at a family planning clinic? They're much more experienced in tricky fittings.

cultkid · 17/10/2022 11:15

It's a controlled drug and most of these instant GPS can't prescribe controlled drugs they can practice other medicines that are not like that which is annoying

If you Google Harley st diazepam there will be a doctor who can do it and probably talk to you today however it will be very very expensive like £200 for the consult and then the script should be cheap to buy as it's a cheap medicine
Can you ask any friends if they have some and could give you a pill?

That's where I am trying to go. I'm also in the procedure Consultants led clinic not with a nurse. The mirena coil I have has been the best thing I ever did for myself so I just have to cope but I am so scared they will give up. I will bite my tongue for any pain and any length of time if it's over and done with. It's the walk of shame after when they give up (I feel like a total failure) that puts me over the edge

OP posts:
phobicpatient · 17/10/2022 11:24

that should read I will "try to bite my tongue" its the idea of the excruciating pain being for nothing that sends me over the edge

Could you take some solpadeine max and an anti histamine like phergan, will give you a zone out experience

phobicpatient · 18/10/2022 11:11

quick update - appt has been cancelled now scheduled for 27th. I suppose it means it might give my GP time to review my request and possibly prescribe. Thanks all.
