Pcos treatment and weightloss

Hi, I am due to receive treatment for pcos soon.

i am just wondering how pcos is treated and how effective it is. What are your experiences?

i also wonder about the effect it has on weight loss. I have struggled with weight loss my whole life, I never loose anything. I go to aqua fit and swimming four times a week, but it has no effect. I also eat well and have given up processed foods and sugary drinks again nothing happens. Has anyone had any similar experience?

What are your obvious symptoms? I have PCOS and my main symptoms are heavy periods and acne. You can manage some symptoms of PCOS but can't cure it. You can take contraceptive hormones for irregular periods, acne & hair growth. I have used to take a pill called Dianette for my acne. After a few years on it I had some very adverse side effects to that have caused me to have recurring migraines so can't take the combined pill anymore. It also has an increased risk of stroke so isn't generally prescribed much now. Unfortunately everyone's experiences, like the effects of PCOS, are very varied. I don't have any weight problems with my PCOS so can't advise on that sorry.

Hi thanks for your reply. My obvious symptoms are related to infrequent and heavy periods. I also have thin unmanageable hair, and hair growth on my face and navel. I have dark patches on my skin.

it also runs in my family.

The biggest one for me is my weight though.

In my experience (I’ve had PCOS for about 18 years now), doctors don’t want to know unless you are morbidly obese…I think that is about 40 bmi? I’ve lost count of the number of doctors I have asked for help - I’m exactly the same and even training for a marathon didn’t help me reach a healthy weight.

The medication I’ve been offered is Orlistat which I wouldn’t touch with a barge pole. Apparently over 40 BMI they can give you other options like Semaglutide but I don’t think anything is a magic pill. Wish I had the answers. Best thing for me was to eat low carb, take PCOS supplements and avoid sugar like the plague. Oh and daily, gentle exercise like walking or swimming and gentle weight training.
