Can I put athletes foot cream in my ear?

I have a fungal infection in my ear. Went to minor injuries today, looked in ear, told that's what it looked like. Unfortunately, there was nobody able to prescribe anything, not qualified, although they did tell me what I need and a prescriber was on duty tomorrow so I should come back. It's a prescription only product apparently.
It hurts and is driving me nuts. Can I put athletes foot cream on a q-tip in my ear?

Would you?

Ask a pharmacist.

(I totally would though...)

Ladyofthepeonies · 18/09/2022 23:03

I wouldn’t

BraverThanYesterday · 18/09/2022 23:04

No. You need a liquid to get all the way into your ear canal.
I used Canesten drops - are they available over the counter?

Galarunner · 18/09/2022 23:05

Isn't canestan the same active ingredient just marketed with different packaging/ application method depending on which part of the body it is for

fakenamefornow · 18/09/2022 23:06

Do you think it'll do me any harm though? It says - for external use only.

Noooooo please don't!! I am a HCP specialising in ears and honestly it could cause so many more problems!
You need a script for an anti fungal!

fakenamefornow · 18/09/2022 23:09

Would something like vinegar do anything?

OP posts:
hashbrownsandwich · 18/09/2022 23:10

A fungus takes a while to build up so don't panic, wait until Tuesday and get a proper anti fungal. Over the counter you could get otomise.

hashbrownsandwich · 18/09/2022 23:11

Don't put vinegar in!
Olive oil is the only thing I would say but if it's confirmed fungal it won't do anything other than lubricate if you ar planning microsuction.
Have they diagnosed otomucisis?.

fakenamefornow · 18/09/2022 23:12

I've had it over a week, everyday it feels a bit more painful and irritating.

OP posts:
hashbrownsandwich · 18/09/2022 23:12

Otomycosis*

hashbrownsandwich · 18/09/2022 23:12

Honestly, best thing would be find a pharmacy for otomise

3littleloves · 18/09/2022 23:13

I mean I suppose technically you can put anything anywhere, how beneficial this would be however would be the question. I tend to lean towards advising against this idea

I first went a couple of days ago and the nurse pulled some stuff out with her big tweezers, looked like flakes of skin. She said it looked like I had eczema in my ear. Told me to get some Ear Calm and come back if that doesn't work. Ear continued to get worse. Today (different nurse) said it looks like a fungal infection and took a swab.

OP posts:
hashbrownsandwich · 18/09/2022 23:19

Ear calm is a good first step to be fair, it's our guidelines to try that before anything else but if swab comes back as fungal it'll be mometasone.

Don't put anything else in!

I recently had a lovely time extracting an infection because a lady used dog ear drops on herself in desperation

fakenamefornow · 18/09/2022 23:25

Thank you all for the advice on the thread, especially @hashbrownsandwich

OP posts:

purpleme12 · 18/09/2022 23:33

Your OP says that you were told a prescriber is on duty tomorrow.

I wouldn't put anything in there that isn't meant for your ear though
