Complex cyst ?

Went to GP couple weeks ago because after every time me and DH have sex I will spot for a couple of days. I have no periods as I'm on the progesterone only pill which stops them.
GP referred me for ultrasound.
I have had external and internal ultrasound today. The sonographer told me I have a complex cyst on my left ovary and to contact my GP in 7-10 days for follow up as to whether they recommend another scan or to see a gyno.

I wasn't expecting a cyst?.. I had polyps removed 6 years ago so assumed it would be the same thing possibly.

Should I be concerned over this complex cyst? Anyone else have them? I've done the Google search and of course only focused on the negatives... 🙄

I just had a Google and a complex cyst is just one filled with blood or solid matter as opposed to clear fluid.

I imagine it’ll be a Dermoid cyst (I had one - 11cm!) or a chocolate cyst (which is filled with blood and is what they thought mine was on the original scan).

Most ovarian cysts are benign, so try not to worry.

@Luredbyapomegranate thank you for getting back to me. 11cm! That's big, did you have surgery and did you lose your ovary?

I had a complex dermoid on my right ovary.

Symptoms started as an ache in my right side and feeling bloated. Went to the GP in May who told me I had IBS. I went back every two weeks as it got more uncomfortable and he kept telling me I had IBS and to go away and drink water.

Obviously he should have done an ultrasound but for some reason he couldn't be bothered. In October it got too much and I went to A&E where I passed out, was admitted with a twisted dermoid, a necrotic ovary and tube and a raging abdo infection. I lost the ovary and tube, spent a week in hospital and six weeks off sick. The GP apologised 🙄

Your GP sounds more diligent and competent, so I imagine they will keep an eye on it and if it's growing, will suggest removal, perhaps with keyhole surgery before it has a chance to twist.

Luredbyapomegranate · 19/09/2022 10:04

yes it was removed by key hole surgery (much bigger and it couldn’t have been key hole).

I did have my ovary removed- they could have tried to keep it but that would have meant that it was less likely they could do it by key hole, and I really didn’t want the recovery time from full surgery / and had no plans to get pregnant.

OP, I should add that I went on to get pregnant without medical assistance, with one ovary and one tube.

Landlubber2019 · 19/09/2022 14:24

I had a complex cyst removed from my left ovary, it was supposed to be removed via keyhole surgery, but this failed and it was removed using traditional surgery. At the same time I had a lap and dye, this was all performed as part of infertility issues.

Within 3 months I had a successful pregnancy test after years of trying!

I've just been diagnosed with a 10cm complex ovarian cyst.

I'd been getting relatively mild, vague symptoms, and at the start of August, suggested ovarian cancer to my GP and he immediately referred me for blood tests and an ultrasound, which identified the cyst.
Despite the blood test showing low markers for cancer, they put me on the "2 week pathway" and I had a gynaecologist appointment TODAY(!). He took another blood sample to and referred me for a CT scan.

I've not actually met the GP, but so far have been impressed with the speed and the fact that they took my vague symptoms seriously.

Googling seems to indicate that most cysts are not cancerous, but I'd suggest you press for a blood test, where they check for an antigen called CA125, which can indicate a tumour.

Good luck, and try not to worry.

@Mintjulia

You poor thing, if only the GP had done what mine did instead of fobbing you off.

Thank so much for the replies.
It has put my mind at ease knowing it is still possibly to conceive as I do definitely want another baby.
I shall contact GP next week for results and next steps.
Thank you all ☺️
