Tell me about your experience on minipill / Morina coil?

Hi ladies. Saw my GP last week because I've been having bleeding between periods. It's been going on for months and months but started getting worse. GP checked my cervix- all fine, I'm up to date with smear, she's referred me for ultrasound but doesn't think they'll find anything, thinks it's hormonal.....

She prescribed me desogesterel minipill (I can't take combined pill due to migraines). Do you have any experience with this pill? GP said it might stop my bleeding but also for some women it makes bleeding worse! She said to try it for 3 months and if it doesn't work we can try Mirena coil but I'm very reluctant to try that, very anxious about insertion being painful! Any good experiences? I haven't had children so worried about cervix being opened

I've been taking the minipill for a week so far and so far spotting every day.... Just keep worrying it's not going to work and coil will be my only hope !!

Minipill led to depression, Minera blooming brilliant (am on my second). However, I had had children before I got a coil fitted and never had a particular problem with smears etc.

Almondsandraisins · 22/08/2022 23:40

I have had the Mirena coil and I haven't had children

I'm not going to lie it was painful. I have an odd shaped uterus though that definitely made it worse and my GP had promised we could stop at any time if I needed to.

It was uncomfortable afterwards for 7-10 days but then afterwards its been bliss. No periods which is a bonus. I used to get a lot of cramping (cysts) pretty much the whole time between my periods as well and thats gone too. No period pain, no ovulation pain.

Having said that I would want to make sure they don't just fob you off with a coil without actually finding out whats wrong with you first. Especially if you do want kids, its just fobbing a problem off down the line.

Thanks for your reply. How painful, would you say? I can handle a bit of pain but seen too many horror stories of women saying they passed out, threw up, screaming... I've never found smears painful, I think I have a fair pain threshold but very anxious about any medical procedures

I am having an ultrasound at some point to check if I have fibroids or anything, GP just doesn't think it's that because my bleeding is always light, periods are light and not painful. It's just spotting all the time!

I'm really hoping the minipill will settle down and work but I'm not convinced, lots of women seem to have trouble with it

OP posts:
Almondsandraisins · 22/08/2022 23:57

I certainly didn't throw up or pass out although I did grip the poor nurses hand rather tight at times

I'm not quite sure what to compare it to. Not as bad as the time I had an inner ear infection and my ear drum perforated. Worse than a smear test.

The thing is its over and done with in a few minutes. So although its not very nice its fairly quick and then its like a bad period cramps for a few days afterwards.

Have the Mirena coil - no issues at all with it!
Had it replaced maybe 5/6 times - no drama!

Icanflyhigh · 23/08/2022 00:05

My mirena coil baby was 10 in April....
My deposit injection baby turns 13 next week ans my mini pill baby is 18 in October.

They didn't work for me......
No regrets just 3 BIG surprises.

SouperNoodle · 23/08/2022 00:09

I had horrendous periods that were so heavy, I referred to them as my monthly tsunamis. I chickened out of a mirena coil after hearing horror stories but needed gynae surgery and the surgeon said he could fit one while I was under so I agreed.
It's been a year since insertion and it's amazing. I bled for 4 weeks straight (lightly) straight after it was inserted but then had extremely light periods. I've now stopped having them all together.

Carrieonmywaywardsun · 23/08/2022 00:12

I love the mini pill. It took about 4-5 months to stop bleeding completely and before that bleeding slowed and just had spotting for a week every 5-6 weeks. No other symptoms (I'm chronically ill and usually get every side effect going but not with the pill

NC4todayx · 23/08/2022 00:14

I had a mirena, and for me, it was awful. Bad anxiety attacks, libido plummeted. Insertion was awful experience and very painful. Have had friends that had them and were fine, however one of them had similar to me, anxiety attacks and zero libido.

Hmm I already have bad anxiety and no libido lol. It's definitely the pain that worries me, I don't want to go through a horrible painful procedure just for it to not stop the bleeding. So hard to decide what to do

Had a copper coil before having a baby and I'm not going to lie I did pass out. They have to measure you with a rod which is a ruler and even though youre told to take ibuprofen and hour before it didn't numb it. I have endometriosis and I have a really high pain threshold but getting the could pre baby hurt but got the mirena after baby and had no problems. Little uncomfortable but no pain during insertion. However my body has a adverse reaction to progesterone so I'm waiting to get my mirena removed and a copper put back in (Dr cut strings too short). I much prefer the copper but that's because I can't hand massive hormone spikes (I was poorly during pregnancy too and have the same symptoms with the mirena coil)

Oh wow 😂 luckily for me it's not for contraception purposes, just to try and control abnormal bleeding,

I’m interested too @rosael56 in a similar situation

rosael56 · 23/08/2022 00:43

So very mixed responses on this thread.. some saying coil was fine, others saying extreme pain... It's such a hard decision! And it's so crap that my two options seem to be a) put up with continuous spotting all the time or b) have something inserted inside me that may cause extreme pain and also may not even help

Ugh 😩

I think the problem in genuinely some people find it okay and others don't and you have no way of knowing which you will be until you have it done

As someone who did find it painful though I would still have it done again for the benefits its bought me

HappyAxolotl · 23/08/2022 02:20

I tried a few varieties of minipill and they all made me bleed heavily and painfully with big clots for weeks on end. However I am on my 4th Mirena and I get a slight smudge for a few hours every 2nd or 3rd month and zero period pain on it. I haven't had children and my first two insertions were painless with only local anaesthetic gel, the next two required local anaesthetic injected into the cervix but they used the numbing gel first so the needle did not hurt at all.

Go to your nearest specialist contraceptive clinic and explain to them your struggles with different methods and they should be able to advise you on what will work best and know how to administer it.

HappyAxolotl · 23/08/2022 02:27

Just to add, I have a tilted cervix and uterus. My 3rd Mirena went in fine then I found I was bleeding a lot and when I went back to the clinic they found it was positioned in the wrong place, no damage done but they took it out and put another in straight away but it flew right out! So I went back in a few weeks and they placed another one plus a transvaginal scan and that coil stayed in place for the 5 years it was supposed to.

HappyAxolotl · 23/08/2022 02:33

Also (sorry it is very late!) if certain pills and mini pills work or not work for you that can indicate if other methods of contraception will work or not.

Eg Cerazette is similar to the arm implant, for one big one. And there is another sort of pill similar to the vaginal ring.

But a good contraceptive clinic will know all this sodo take along notes of what you have used so far.

Emus · 23/08/2022 10:10

My situation is slightly different as I have both the mini pill and the Mirena.

I went to see the gynaecologist is March for heavy periods and came away with the Mirena. Since then I had spotting/bleeding pretty much all the time so I've been prescribed the mini pill to try and help kick start my body into a routine. Currently having my first proper period since March.

I had zero pain with the fitting and was surprised when he informed me it was all done! I think I had some numbing gel first. I'm hoping to keep the Mirena but if I continue to spot it'll have to go. Don't let the initial discomfort of the fitting put you off.

Geordielass1987 · 23/08/2022 10:12

Have you had children op?
when I had my first coil I hadn’t had children and it hurt abit, when I had my second coil I’d had a child and literally didn’t feel a thing it was a breeze!

Justjoinedforthis · 23/08/2022 10:12

I had copper coil previously and had quite long periods, but no pain for me. Now on the mini pill, started after having a baby and haven’t had a period since (nearly 3 years). I do feel its affected my libido, possibly slightly more emotional but hard to tell.

rosael56 · 23/08/2022 11:43

Thanks for all your replies everyone. Definitely gives me a lot to think about. I will stick with the mini pill for the 3 months to see if the bleeding stops, it's only been a week so I'm being a bit premature thinking it won't work. I suppose if it doesn't work I will have to give the coil a try.

@Geordielass1987 no I haven't had children. That's why I'm a bit scared!

I started the mini pill (cerelle) on the 21 July my first period after having DS . Not to be the bearer of bad news but I have bled/spotted every day since then . GP was useless because like you I cannot take the combined pill anymore due to migraines , their advice was to persevere .. well I’ve had enough now and got an appointment tomorrow to discuss other options .

I am thinking about the copper coil !

torquewench · 23/08/2022 12:05

I have a mirena. Currently on my second one.Best thing ive ever done for myself. Some discomfort having it fitted but no worse than period pain. No periods in 7 years.

Me too!
No issue with it except one time I went to get it replaced and the nurse asked why I was a year late - long story short they had given me a card with the wrong date on it that I had just stuck in a drawer, which I then used to make the next appointment
For the year (when it was out of date!) I had had spotting / bit of period pain that I had never had and assumed it was the menopause !
I was a bit Sad that I could have got pregnant it didn't!
Now I make sure I check the details!
