All about period pants

Dd14 has recently started her periods. She used sanitary towels for the first one, but going forward, I'd like to get her some period pants. I've been looking at Modibodi and Primark so far.

I've been wondering how girls manage at school. She's out of the house for about eight hours...is that too long to wear one pair of period pants? She has ADHD and can be a bit forgetful, so I want to make this easy for her, at least to begin with. If she has to change sanitary wear (any kind) at school, she's likely to forget to pack spares the night before and then get caught short.

Also, as I understand it, you just rinse the pants in cold water after use and then pop them in the washing machine when you have a suitable load. But that could take several days! Is it ok to leave rinsed, damp pants in a bucket for a few days or will they start to disintegrate.?

Thank you for your time!

I would like to know this too.
I was thinking I'd put them through a rinse in the machine rather than by hand?

My DD can be a bit forgetful too, suspected ASD/ADD.

I gave her a selection of things to try and she really uses the pants as a back up to catch leaks or for her lighter days.

TBH though they don't really get rinsed, just get thrown in the wash.

Sorry pressed post too soon.

She has Modibodi, Primark & Sainsburys but Modibodi are the best.

I use the M&S ones, the heavy flow ones can last me all day even on my heaviest days. Having said that it's best to change as soon as you get home on a heavy day (especially if it's warm...) I take them off when I have a shower and rinse them at the same time. They then go into the washing machine to be put on the next load.

I use modibodi. Depends on flow whether I can manage 8 hours. They come with a wet bag so she can put a clean pair in there then swap. Once home rinse them off. I tend to put mine on a 15 min cycle after two days. They will be fine left wet just don't soak them.

I use the cheeky pants ones, they work really well. I just store the used ones in a bucket with a lid (dry) then give all my used pants and pads a short cold rinse cycle before washing them with the rest of the laundry. Ime they do need some sort of soak or rinse if they are heavily soiled otherwise the clean laundry does have a smell to it.

At school it might be a good idea to wear the period pants with a sanitary towel, then all she needs to do during the day is remove the towel and not mess about with anything else for the rest of the day - if she’s not experiencing really heavy flow

TheBikiniExpert · 22/08/2022 16:14

My dd uses a pad in her period pants on heavy days and then she can discard it rather than changing completely. It still cuts down drastically on number of pads used as only really on first 2 days this is needed.

dameofdilemma · 22/08/2022 16:17

Dd uses Modibodi (the only ones that fit as she's only 10). She uses them with a san towel and then either changes it part way through the school day or ditches it (and just wears Modibodi for the rest of the school day), depending on whether she can get to her school bag at break/lunch time to get a san towel.

I (or dd if I can persuade her..) rinse the MB in cold water until the water runs clear then they go in a normal 40 degree wash. Seems fine so far. Dd has 5 pairs so allows time for wash and dry.

Dd also uses the MB swim period pants under her swimming costume when needed.

They're great for reassurance against leaks, especially at night time.

DD is 14 and has Down syndrome. We’ve got some cheeky wipes period pads and primark ones. Like pp suggests, she wears a pad in them to school and then at lunchtime, takes it off and just wears the pants until bed time. It’s worked fine for her. We got given a zip up bag with the cheeky ones so at the end of the day she puts them in there and then I rinse them out and wash when I do a wash load. They dry pretty quickly I’ve found.

Thanks everyone! It sounds like the "rules" wrt period pants are completely different to those governing use of disposable sanitary protection. We'll try a few different brands of period pants and see how she gets on.
