Mastitis part two - infected baby bite?

I've just finished a course of antibiotics for nasty mastitis. 14mo DD has been biting (only my right breast) and I suspect the infection got in through the bite. The mastitis has gone, and I've been trying to carry on feeding DD on that side, but she keeps biting in exactly the same place so the wound just doesn't heal. It's going a bit yellow and oozy, and it's really sore. There doesn't seem to be any infection in the actual breast any more.

What do I do? Can I put anything on the cut? Or do I just never feed her on that side again? It's not just the odd nip, she clings on with her teeth and it's agony.

It’s sounds so painful. I had the same many years ago. I used high strength Manuka honey and it did the trick- you can use with babies over 1, so you don’t have to wash it off.

You could also try nipple shields (if baby allows!) to prevent further biting?

LaMadrilena · 16/08/2022 15:42

Hadn't thought of honey, I'll see if I can find any. I forgot to say, I tried nipple shields but she's 14 months so too aware of the difference. In fact she just laughed in my face.

Multi-mam compresses are pricy but might work between feeds right heal your bite.

My ds used to bite. My HV told me to pull him closer when he bit so he would release. It's counterintuitive but worked and after a few tries seemed to put him off biting.

Update: breast is red, wound has pus and it appears to be tracking, so I'm in A&E (only ooh option in Spain, GP couldn't see me till Thurs pm).

She needs to be taken off if she's biting that hard and repetitively and needs to understand she won't be allowed to feed on it again if she keeps biting. You could express from that side for a bit to give it a break and to actually stick to not feeding her on that side. When mine bite me I always said a firm no and unlatch them and put them down, if they did it again next time I definitely would be repeating the same and explain that it was no to that side until they stopped.

How long was your last course of antibiotics?

LaMadrilena · 16/08/2022 21:13

Just back (A&E is v efficient here!). They've drained an abscess and prescribed more antibiotics.

Last course of antibiotics was 10 days. And yes, she won't be getting any more out of my right breast. Expressing only from now on.
