Cracked nipple (not breastfeeding)

Not me but young adult DD.

She's travelling abroad. Was very ill a few days ago with covid and tonsillitis but also cracked nipple which was leaking pus, hot and sore breast.

Was put on 10 days of amoxicillin for the throat infection, think it was assumed that would clear breast infection too.

4 days on, throat is much better but breast isn't. She's now in another country.

She's looking for a clinic to go to today but she and I are quite worried, Googling it was a scary mistake.

Has anyone experienced this and can advise or reassure?

She's a grown up but it's still so scary her being so far away and unwell.

That sounds painful. No advice I'm sorry, but she is doing the right thing by seeking medical advice today. It should hopefully clear up with another course of antibiotics. Does she have all the necessary health insurance?

Caminante · 06/08/2022 14:47

@PutinIsAWarCriminal
Thank you, yes she does have insurance thankfully

OP where is she? That might make a difference to the advice

I’m pretty sure you can get mastitis even when you’re not breastfeeding. It usually but not exclusively affects breastfeeding mums.

It's South America but she's in a very big city.
We're floundering a bit trying to work out where the best place is to go.

Yes I've seen that online, along with some more scary stuff.

Yes, have experienced this. Not pleasant.

A mega dose of antibiotics should zap it. It is very deliberating and can leave you quite unwell but the drugs should help.

Remind her to stock up on live yogurt also!

Debilitating, of course!

Thanks for the reply @polkadotclip, do you know how you ended up getting it? How long did it take to clear up?

She hasn't had any satisfactory advice today so is considering flying to the US where her dad is. I'd be relieved if she did that.

Sorry was away from the phone.

how is she now?

Not sure how I got it except that I think I was run down generally. Just Suddenly had a fever and felt really really poorly, had a terrible pain in my breast and realised it was boiling hot and dark purple.

diagnosed over the phone by out of hours gp and had antibiotics within an hour. Two different types of antibiotics, Every 6 or 8 hours.. it was a full time job just taking the drugs!

It took a few days, maybe 3 to feel ok and then the full course to be fully recovered.

No indication of how I got it or why — so was referred for a full check, scans and mammogram 10 days or so later, all clear.

when she is better I recommend this, for peace of mind.

@polkadotclip thanks so much for replying.

She has been to see a doctor and has been given a different antibiotic by injection and some cream (antiseptic or antifungal maybe?) and better instructions for self care --hot and cold compresses, ibuprofen, covering with gauze.

She's very reassured by this and so am I.

But absolutely, as soon as she gets home I'll make sure she goes to the GP for a check up. I can't rest easy until she does.

She is probably quite run down also, never stopping to rest, and I think this has been a scary reminder to slow down when she's ill and give her body time to heal.

That's great. Hoping it clears up soon and hopefully she will feel much better with the stronger Anribiotic. Flowers
