Hysterectomy - remove cervix or not?

Hello, I am due to have a hysterectomy whenever the long waiting list gets round to me, but I need to decide whether to have my cervix removed (apparently I’m too young (at probably 48 by the time the op comes round) for my ovaries to be removed).

Does anyone have views, experiences, regrets, etc. about cervix removal, please?

Hi GC I had a subtotal hysterectomy 20 years ago, ie kept my cervix and ovaries. I wanted to feel my normal self inside but end the horrific bleeding I was getting every 21 days. Magic! Wish I'd done it before.

I was 50 at the time.

I had a total with my cervix removed (reduced cancer risk) blooming fantastic. Made absolutely no difference to how I feel at all Smile

My cervix and ovaries were removed and I was younger than you when I had my hysterectomy (42). I don't notice any difference from not having a cervix.

I would say that if there's a chance your cervix might need removing in the future it would make sense to have it out now, to spare yourself the possibility of more surgery and recovery time. Another benefit is not needing smear tests.

If your ovaries are healthy, you should keep them as long as you can because otherwise you will go straight into a very full-on menopause. Mine were irreparably damaged, unfortunately, so had to come out.

I had a radical hysterectomy and notice no difference without a cervix. I wasn't given a choice but if I had been, I think I would have opted to have it removed as then the cancer risk is gone.

I too had a full hysterectomy at 42. You are definitely not too young!!

Had mine removed at 28 during a radical hysterectomy. No regrets. Wished it had been done sooner tbh. Woke up a new woman.

I had a total hysterectomy and my cervix/ovaries removed when I was 46. I started HRT 4 weeks later, I'm now 53 and still on the patches. It took about 6 months to get the HRT doses right but I've been fine ever since.

Thanks for all your posts, so helpful. Interesting that ovary removal could be an option too, will talk more to the consultant about that. I’m very nervous about the surgery, but also weirdly looking forward to it and to hopefully having a normal life afterwards.

I’d have it all out at 48. If it’s not there it can’t become cancerous.
