Hysteroscopy

I'm due to have a hysteroscopy in a month's time and wandering if anyone has had one? I spoke to someone a few weeks ago who said it was the worse pain she felt and ended up having a local anesthetic in her cervix and that hurt just as much so now I'm freaking out. I remember years ago when i had ivf, when they did the transfer it was so painful for me that i nearly passed out and this sounds very similar. I've had scan/internal scans ect. How painful is one? What should I expect? Thankyou

BTW @SirChenjins the biopsy is a tiny, tiny nip that lasts for 2 seconds. I had one on its own (no camera) and it was less uncomfortable than a smear.

If anyone has heavy bleeding, something has gone badly wrong @SirChenjins

You have to report any bleeding as it's not expected.

I wasn't back at work after mine but I did take public transport home.

It varies so much from woman to woman. Just like giving birth.
It's unsettling for these threads to become a competition over who did or didn't have pain.

FWIW there is very detailed guidance on this and they do note that having a GA statistically results in more serious incidents of perforation. Sedation (although women here talk about it) is not recommended as it has particular risks.

  1. The bleeding I had was normal - it wasn’t heavy to the extent it was soaking through pads and was checked. It was certainly heavier that I imagined it would be. Bleeding absolutely is to be expected www.uhs.nhs.uk/Media/UHS-website-2019/Patientinformation/Womenshealth/Recovering-well-after-hysteroscopy-patient-information.pdf and www.nhs.uk/conditions/hysteroscopy/recovery/
  2. Don’t be unsettled by women who share their experiences of pain - between 5 & 25% women will be affected by some level of pan varying from mild to extreme, and it’s extremely important women are made aware of the choices they have when it comes to having hysteroscopies. 75% find them absolutely fine or ok - which is obviously great if you’re one of the the 75%.
  3. The incidence of perforation under GA is around 1%, less without, but not zero.

Great - I’m very pleased that was your personal experience.

I think once I get the phonecall I'll feel better I can ask the questions I need. I have done a bit of googling on what to expect. When I had my hsg before my last tube removal it was very painful and I really suffered afterwards. During my second tube removal I was told I had a lot of scar tissue which seemed to be causing alot of cramping so they burnt away what they could, since then any internals I've had have been a little more uncomfortable than they normally would have been but not painful just crampy. So I'm unsure if all that as contributed to me being abit more tender around the old uterus area 😂. It's the thought of a cervix dilation aswell that just sounds like torture.

I had a GA for this,

Mine was painful.

But the nurses and consultant were amazing and room their time and helped me through breathing exercises. Had it last October.

Had a hysterectomy a few weeks ago so never have to go through being poked up there again Grin
