I just went to the toilet and there is bright red blood when I wipe. Not a huge amount but enough for it to look like the start of my period. I’m mid cycle.

I had a clear smear last year and a nurse checked my cervix a few months ago and said it looked healthy.

I am so scared. I’ve got a little 2 year old and can’t help but think the worst. Going to try and see the GP tomorrow.

Can this ever be normal?

Is there any chance you could be pregnant?

there could be loads of reasons for this.

Whathefisgoingon · 19/07/2022 21:46

No, definitely not. 😞

There are hundreds of possible reasons, most of which are nothing to panic about, but you should see your gp.
In the meantime don't Google! That way madness lies.

BobMortimersPocketMeat · 19/07/2022 21:51

Possible TMI question, but are you sure it’s coming from your vagina? I have had this before, once from a lovely pile which appears intermittently, and bleeds like a bastard if I catch it wrong; and once from an accidental scratch on my vulva, which also bled much more than I would have expected.

Even if it is coming from your vagina, there are non-sinister reasons for bleeding between periods, so no need to panic. It’s just recommended that you get it checked out because it can be a sign of something which would need attention.

weirdhappenings · 19/07/2022 21:53

I used to get this. I have a cervical ectropion. I would randomly have bleeding mid cycle.

MrsMigginsCat · 19/07/2022 21:55

I had this. Was a hormone imbalance. A dose of norethisterone got my cycle back on track.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 19/07/2022 21:56

I had this but about a week after my period. I thought it was the Covid vaccine that had messed up my period but it turned out to be a polyp on the neck of my womb. Also the return of my endometriosis 😢

Whathefisgoingon · 19/07/2022 21:59

Definitely coming from within. I checked internally to see if I was still actively bleeding!

I had a pelvic ultrasound last year to check everything and apparently it was all good.

The worrying thing is that I had gone to the GP about heavy periods a few months ago as it wasn’t something I’d experienced before. She said as I’d had a clear recent pelvic ultrasound and covid, she figured it was covid messing with it as she’d heard it a lot. Things did go back to normal the month after so I didn’t think about it again, but now this has got me worrying I’ve left something festering.

I am also having very mild cramping. Almost like the start of my period, but the bleeding is almost non existent now, very pinky and light and I am 10 days away from my period! I know from tracking my period pre baby that I ovulate quite late, is there any chance ovulation bleeding could present like this? I’ve never had it before.

Did you breastfeed for a long time? I had this about six months after I stopped bfing (at 18 months) and it was an ovarian cyst. I don't actually even know that breastfeeding / hormone changes was the cause, but I hadn't had anything like that happen when younger. I had quite a lot of cramping both before and after the bleeding (when it bursts). I think it's likely to burst either during ovulation or during your period. If you can manage to get a scan in the next few days I think they would be able to confirm. It's really quite common and I think a lot more likely than any sinister alternative. Hope you feel better soon.

Managed to get an appointment this morning so I am going to push for further investigation. No fob offs this time.

Feeling quite fobbed off. Ultimately I was told that an irregular bleed is extremely common and could be stress! Since I had a clear smear and pelvic ultrasound last year I really had to push for another ultrasound, and this time internal rather than external like before.

They had a look at my cervix and said I have a very tiny erosion which is totally normal and wouldn’t have caused the bleed as it’s barely noticeable. This was never there before and I’ve had about 5 swabs and cervical checks in the last year!

Im going to go to a private gyne. For the last year I have had excessive discharge, periods that are heavier than normal and 2 occasions of irregular bleeding. They can tell me this is normal all they like but it’s not normal for me.

I think it’s probably best if you do.

Mrsworried1 · 01/09/2022 00:31

How are you getting on? Same situation for me. I went private and they said the same as nhs. X

Whathefisgoingon · 01/09/2022 07:55

@Mrsworried1 Did they do any tests for you?

I saw a private gynae who did a smear and swabs, then referred me to a consultant radiologist with a gynae speciality for an ultrasound - everything came back normal except the swabs which showed BV. She said this is why there is some irritation on my cervix as it’s been sitting in BV.

Bleeding hasn’t happened again, but my current period is the heaviest it’s ever been.

I had covid in Feb and I now suspect that is the reason for all these changes.

Mrsworried1 · 01/09/2022 08:23

The private just did an examination. Went back to nhs last month and they’ve arranged a hysteroscopy (camera in womb) and a mirena coil. No smear not due till next spring. Really worried, but they said as last one hpv negative , unlikely to be the cause. Still worried from all the bleeding for so Long xx

Whathefisgoingon · 01/09/2022 10:03

@Mrsworried1 are you still experiencing bleeding or was it a one off?

Private gynae can do a smear regardless of whether it’s due or not. It’s my understanding they also check for cell changes regardless of HPV status x
